The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) deployed over 400 pumps to clear accumulated rainwater from roadways.

Waterlogging was reported along several sections of Murree Road, particularly at Committee Chowk underpass, Murree Chowk, Banni Chowk, Jamia Masjid Road, Iqbal Road, and other key arteries, causing major traffic disruptions.

A WASA spokesperson stated that teams equipped with heavy machinery are working continuously to drain water from roads and low-lying areas.

The operation is being personally supervised by WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf.

The spokesperson added that Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin and Secretary Housing Noorul Amin Mengal are in constant contact with the Managing Director to monitor drainage efforts.

Emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122, are engaged in clearing debris and restoring access in major cities.

Further intermittent rain is forecast over the next 12 to 20 hours, though a reduction in intensity is expected.

However, thunderstorms and strong winds remain likely in Islamabad, Pothohar, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and parts of Balochistan and central and southern Punjab.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has urged the public to cooperate with authorities, follow safety guidelines, and avoid high-risk areas to prevent further loss of life.

She appealed to residents to observe official instructions, comply with evacuation orders, and take all necessary precautions.

Emergency services remain on high alert, working around the clock to mitigate the impact of the ongoing floods.

LAHORE/OKARA/FAISALABAD:

Torrential monsoon rains wreaked havoc across Punjab on Wednesday, killing at least 44 people and injuring hundreds of others, with widespread structural damage reported from several districts, especially due to collapsed roofs and electrocution.

The devastation is likely to continue into Thursday as officials warned the relentless monsoon system would persist until at least July 17 (today). Another 16 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Balochistan.

Structural collapses and electrocution were cited as primary causes, with most casualties recorded in Lahore, Okara, Faisalabad and surrounding districts.

In Lahore, torrential downpours measured at 170mm led to multiple deadly incidents. Sixteen people were killed and six others severely injured as three rooftops caved in across the city.

In Muridwal village near Thokar Niaz Baig, five members of the same family lost their lives, including 60-year-old Manga, his wife Ishrat (55), their daughters Khadija (3) and Latifa (4) and daughter-in-law Rani (35). The injured included 30-year-old Faisal and his five-year-old daughter Bubbly.

In Raiwind Road's Mission Colony, three people perished – Nasreen (70), Meerab (8), and Bashir (80), while another individual, Fareed (21), was rescued and hospitalised.

In nearby Kot Jamal, a roof collapse claimed the life of 35-year-old Bashir, while 32-year-old Nadeem, 29-year-old Sonia, and 8-year-old Daim were injured.

Likewise, in Okara, at least seven people, including five children, were killed due to collapsing structures, electrocution and one drowning incident.

Two girls, 10-year-old Mahnoor and 8-year-old Iqra, died after falling into an obscured well due to accumulated rainwater. Several others were injured in incidents reported from 25/2R, Sabzi Mandi, Haveli Lakha and Marola Sharif.

In Faisalabad, at least seven people died while 36 were injured in 23 separate roof collapse incidents. A 45-year-old woman Nasreen and her 14-year-old son Adeel were buried under rubble.

In Rachna Town, a couple – Shahmand (50) and his wife Riaz Bibi (40) — were killed. A two-year-old child, Ali Mohsin, died in Chak 392GB and several others were hospitalised with minor to critical injuries.

Lahore inundated

According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), monsoon rainfall was recorded across most districts, including 217mm in Sheikhupura, 170mm in Okara, 130mm in Chichawatni, 90mm in Hafizabad, and 85mm in Kasur. Other cities such as Faisalabad (60mm), Mandi Bahauddin (32mm), and Jhelum (29mm) also reported significant rain.

More downpours are expected in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Multan, DG Khan, and Bahawalpur divisions, with the current monsoon cycle forecast to continue until July 17.

Citizens have been advised to avoid staying in dilapidated or mud-structured homes, which accounted for most of the fatal roof collapses. PDMA has reiterated calls for precaution, especially keeping children away from electric poles, wiring, and waterlogged areas.

Twin cities spared major damage

In contrast, light to moderate rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi brought temporary relief without major flooding.

According to WASA Rawalpindi, emergency protocols remained in place with heavy machinery deployed to low-lying areas.

Fortunately, water levels remained manageable with no urban flooding reported. Rainfall recorded in Rawalpindi ranged from 9mm to 23mm across different localities.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed the provision of the best possible medical care to the injured and announced financial aid to families of the deceased under provincial policy.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay informed via official alerts and cooperate with administrative staff in case of emergency evacuations. The Punjab government has pledged full support to protect lives and livestock as rains continue to lash the province.

More rains are expected through the weekend, with WASA and PDMA both maintaining high alert across the province

Rivers swell

The PDMA has warned of potential flash flooding in hill torrents in the Dera Ghazi Khan division between July 16 and 17.

Urban flooding threats also loom over Punjab's major cities, with authorities anticipating moderate-to-high flow in the rivers Jhelum and Chenab at several key locations, including Mangla, Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad.

A low-level flood is expected at Tarbela (Indus River) and Marala (Chenab River), with the situation in upper catchments potentially worsening over the next 24 to 36 hours due to heavy upstream rains.

Commissioner and deputy commissioners across the province have been placed on high alert.

Relief Commissioner Nabil Javed has directed field presence of administrative officers and emergency activation of disaster response teams, fuel reserves, and evacuation protocols.

Citizens living in riverbeds have been urged to evacuate with their livestock, and flood relief camps are being equipped with essential supplies.

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan – July 17, 2025 – Heavy monsoon rainfall has brought Rawalpindi to a standstill today, prompting authorities to declare a local holiday across the district. The torrential downpour has led to widespread urban flooding, with water levels in the Nullah Leh canal surging dangerously high, triggering evacuation warnings for residents in low-lying areas.

The city’s streets are waterlogged, and residents are navigating submerged areas as concerns mount over the overflowing Nullah Leh. Water levels at Gawalmandi and Katarian bridges have reached critical thresholds, raising fears of widespread evacuations if the situation deteriorates further. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) indicated that the Katarian bridge could face flooding if the water level surpasses 15.7 feet.

In response to the escalating situation, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Hassan Waqar Cheema announced that all offices and schools, including those in cantonment areas, would remain closed today. Citizens have been strongly advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency services, including WASA, Civil Defence, and Rescue-1122, have been placed on high alert, with preparations for possible army support underway. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also summoned an emergency meeting to review the measures taken for citizen safety and assess damages caused by the rain and urban flooding.

Weather Today-Latest Updates

Rawalpindi has recorded over 200 millimeters of rainfall so far, with downpours expected to continue throughout the day at intervals. The current temperature is 28°C, feeling like 33°C due to humidity, under partly cloudy skies. The forecast for today is rainy, with a high of 30°C and a low of 25°C. Approximately 0.63 inches of rain are anticipated. Winds are blowing from the east at 11 km/h, and the UV index is low.

标题:Section 144 imposed across Punjab, ‘emergency’ in parts as rains claim dozens of lives in past 24 hours

时间:2025-7-17 20:49:00

正文:

Section 144 was imposed across Punjab along with a state of emergency in several districts on Thursday as heavy rains triggered flooding and claimed over 60 lives across the province in the past 24 hours, according to authorities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday issued a warning of torrential rains with wind-thundershowers that would last throughout the country till today. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecasted that heavy rains will continue to lash parts of the country over the next 24 hours.

“Sixty-three citizens have died while 290 were injured due to monsoon rains [across the province] in the past 24 hours,” read a statement by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) spokesperson.

“At least 15 were reported dead in Lahore, nine in Faisalabad, five in Sahiwal, three in Pakpattan and nine in Okara,” the PDMA statement detailed, adding that the families of the deceased will receive compensation from the government.

An order from the Punjab Home Department said there was a significant increase in the accumulation of rainwater in low-lying areas, streets and open spaces, posing serious risks to the safety of children who often bathed in standing water.

“ Dams, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes and distributaries across the province of Punjab experience heightened water levels and stronger currents during these periods, making swimming and unauthorised boating activities extremely hazardous for human life, leading to a high potential for drowning and other tragic incidents.

“Prevailing weather conditions and the inherent dangers associated with these activities, necessitates immediate preventive measures to safeguard public safety and prevent loss of precious human lives,” the order said.

It added that the home secretary was thus imposing a complete ban under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure across the province on bathing in accumulated rainwater on streets, roads, open spaces, or any other area where rainwater has collected; swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes and distributaries, and boating by any unauthorised person or for unauthorised purposes in dams, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes and distributaries.

“This order shall remain in force for a period of 45 days from the date of issuance unless withdrawn.”

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also announced that “a rain emergency has been imposed in different areas of Punjab due to unprecedented torrential rains and a flood situation.”

She added that directives were issued to keep the public alert through sirens and announcements. The chief minister urged the public to cooperate with the local authorities and take safety precautions.

In Jhelum, rescue operations were underway to evacuate citizens trapped in floodwaters in Dhok Biddar, Dhok Shah Arif, Sohawa, Rasoolpur, Chak Muhammad and Bhampar villages, according to Punjab Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad.

Around 57 people have been rescued so far with the help of the Pakistan Army, he said in a statement, with more than 50 rescue boats involved in the Jhelum operations.

The spokesperson added that rescue teams have been deployed across the province, including Mianwali, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Attock, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and Layyah. Over 15,000 rescue personnel and 800 rescue boats were on high alert, Ahmad added.

“Pakistan Army personnel and rescue teams are currently rushing the citizens to safe locations,” he said.

“Children were screaming for help, and women stood on rooftops, waving their shawls and begging to be rescued,” Tariq Mehbood Bhatti, a 51-year-old farmer in Gujrat’s Ladian village, was quoted as saying by AFP.

Punjab Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Director General Tayyab Farid said that “rivers have overflowed due to heavy rains in Rawalpindi, Chakwal and surrounding areas”, leading to a flood situation.

“Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from power lines and open manholes,” the Wasa DG said in a statement.

The PMD’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) warned that urban flooding was expected in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Faisalabad divisions during the next 24 hours.

However, it added that the wet spell was likely to subside in the next 48 hours.

In a post on X, the PMD said the heavy monsoon rains triggered a “significant surge” in water levels at the Tarbela, Mangla, Khanpur, Simly and Rawal reservoirs.

The water level at Khanpur witnessed a gain of 4.5 feet, while the other four recorded an increase of a foot each.

In a weather outlook, the FFD said the water flows in the eastern rivers were likely to increase from July 21.

Pakistan experiences monsoon rainfall from June to September every year. The heavy rains also trigger deadly floods, landslides and displacement, particularly in vulnerable, poorly drained, or densely populated areas.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority’s website, monsoon rains since June 26 have killed 178 people across the country and injured 491 people.

The majority of casualties were recorded in Punjab, the country’s most populous province, with 103 deaths and 385 injuries. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported 38 fatalities, Sindh 20, Balochistan 16 and one death in Azad Kashmir.

Over 57 per cent of nationwide deaths were caused by “house-collapse” incidents. Monsoon rains so far have damaged 610 houses and led to the deaths of 126 livestock.
