Heavy rains and flash floods have claimed 10 more lives across Pakistan in the last 24 hours as the monsoon spell intensifies, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Wednesday.

According to the NDMA, four deaths were reported in Punjab, four in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and two in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B). No casualties were reported in Sindh, Balochistan and Azad Kashmir.

Since the onset of the monsoon season in late June, at least 252 people have lost their lives and nearly 611 have been injured due to torrential rains, devastating floods, and storms that have swept across the country. The latest death toll represents a significant rise from the previous count of 242 reported on Tuesday.

Punjab has recorded the highest number of fatalities with 139 deaths, followed by K-P with 60. Other severely affected regions include Sindh, which has reported 24 deaths, and Balochistan with 16.

In Islamabad, six people, including four children, were swept away by the floods. Five fatalities were also reported in G-B, while two deaths occurred in Azad Kashmir. According to the NDMA, the total toll includes 121 children, 46 women, and 85 men.

Meanwhile, the Tarbela Dam administration has issued a high alert as a major flood wave approaches. The dam’s water level has reached 1,530 feet, close to its 1,550-foot capacity. Inflows stand at 333,000 cusecs, with 332,600 cusecs being discharged, and power generation continues from 17 units producing 3,500 MW.

Amid the worsening conditions, the K-P Tourism Department has established a Flood Emergency Response Unit in tourist areas under the directives of Advisor Zahid Chanzeb. Units have been activated in Peshawar, Hazara, and Malakand divisions, while all staff leaves have been cancelled. Tourist police and helpline 1422 have been mobilised for public assistance.

Officials have warned that rainfall is expected to continue until July 25, and urged the public to remain alert and avoid flood-prone zones.

Flash flood alert for Northern Pakistan

Meanwhile, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an advisory for 23rd and 24th July, warning that heavy rains may trigger flash floods in local nullahs and streams across Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan’s hill torrents, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir.

Across Pakistan, widespread monsoon activity is being driven by a seasonal low over northwest Balochistan and moist currents from the Arabian Sea. A westerly wave is also influencing the upper regions of the country, bringing unstable conditions and an elevated risk of flash floods, landslides and infrastructural damage.

Urban flooding is also a concern in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Okara, Nowshera and Peshawar, where heavy downpours are likely to overwhelm drainage systems, the Met Office warned.

Local authorities are monitoring low-lying areas for potential urban flooding, particularly as drainage systems remain under pressure from increased moisture levels and seasonal runoff.

Landslide warnings

In mountainous regions of K-P, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the threat of landslides and mudslides remains high, raising the risk of road closures and transport disruptions. PMD officials have cautioned against non-essential travel in these areas during the forecast period.

Forecasts for Wednesday and Thursday suggest rain, wind and thundershowers are likely in Kashmir,  K-P, Islamabad, Punjab, G-B and northeast Balochistan, with very heavy falls expected in upper K-P,   G-B, Pothohar region, northeast Punjab and Kashmir.

In Kashmir, Muzaffarabad received 49 mm and Kotli 16 mm. K-P saw moderate rainfall with 31mm in Kakul and 26mm in Balakot. In G-B, Bagrote recorded 9mm of rain.

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/PESHAWAR:

As the monsoon fury lays waste to country, the devastating impact of rains and flash floods have claimed at least 234 lives, left 596 injured and damaged 826 homes since June 26, according to the latest figures released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Moreover, two men, two women and eight children were the latest to lose their lives in rain-related incidents over the past 24 hours on Tuesday, while ten others sustained injuries.

The unrelenting downpour has also resulted in the death of 203 livestock, displacement of families and disruption of critical infrastructure nationwide.

Over 62 rescue operations have been carried out so far, with 450 people rescued, while 27 relief and medical camps have been established to support those affected.

The NDMA warns that the threat is far from over, as further heavy rainfall is forecast across northern and hilly regions, raising serious concerns over urban flooding, landslides, mudslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

Five dead in Babusar

Meanwhile, at least five people, including four tourists and a local, lost their lives, while over a dozen remain missing in Babusar, according to Diamer Deputy Commissioner Atta-ur-Rehman.

The tragic incident struck on Monday when a cloudburst triggered flash floods along the scenic route.

The floods swept away over 30 vehicles, completely destroying 10 to 15 of them and rendered 7 to 8 kilometres of Babusar Road impassable.

Four connecting bridges, two mosques and more than 50 houses were also destroyed, while fibre optic and electricity lines were damaged, cutting off communications. Tourists in Thak and Babusar lost contact with their families.

Rescue operations were initially hampered by nightfall but resumed at dawn. Over 200 stranded tourists have been rescued and brought to Chilas, where hotels have been opened free of cost.

Local residents played a crucial role in the relief efforts, alongside the Pakistan Army, which deployed helicopters and troops to evacuate tourists and deliver food and medical aid.

Children among the most affected

The breakdown of casualties paints a grim picture of the devastation caused by rain-related incidents across the country, with children emerging as the most vulnerable victims.

Punjab has been the worst-hit province, reporting a staggering 135 deaths, including 48 men, 24 women, and 63 children, along with 470 injuries. The high number of child fatalities underscores the severe toll the recent downpours have taken on young lives.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 56 people have lost their lives, comprising 16 men, 10 women and 30 children. Another 71 individuals have been injured in the province.

Sindh has recorded 24 deaths and 40 injuries, while Balochistan has reported 16 fatalities and four injuries due to rain-related incidents.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has confirmed two deaths and eight injuries, whereas Islamabad Capital Territory has reported the tragic death of a child.

Gilgit-Baltistan, although spared fatalities, has reported three injuries.

The NDMA data shows that a majority of the 596 injuries nationwide involved children, women, and elderly persons, highlighting the disproportionate impact on already vulnerable groups as the rains continue to wreak havoc.

Individual tragedies compound the crisis

Meanwhile, in Swat, five children were killed in separate rain-related incidents.

In Malam Jabba's Sur Dherai, two young boys drowned while crossing a stream with their mother. Elsewhere in Gujar Band Shanko, a house collapse due to rain killed three children and critically injured a woman.

In Islamabad, a retired official and his 25-year-old daughter drowned after their car was swept away by floodwaters in Phase 5 of a private housing society. The vehicle had stalled on a flooded road, and both were carried into a drainage canal before rescue teams could intervene.

In response to the widespread devastation, the disaster management authority has stepped up relief operations by dispatching a total of 3,349 essential items to affected regions.

Among the aid sent are 349 tents, 358 blankets, 500 sandbags and 554 kitchen sets to help families find shelter and manage basic household needs in temporary conditions.

To ensure comfort and protection, the NDMA has also distributed 266 quilts, 76 mattresses, 305 mosquito nets and 88 tarpaulins.

For sustenance and immediate survival, 153 food packs have been provided, along with 201 gas stoves to facilitate cooking. To manage water accumulation and rescue efforts, 95 dewatering pumps and three rescue boats have also been deployed.

Additional supplies, including life jackets, hygiene kits, plastic mats and jerry cans, are being delivered to support thousands of displaced citizens as relief efforts continue across the country.

Heavy rains to continue

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued high-level warnings for continued heavy to very heavy rainfall across Punjab, K-P, G-B, AJK, Islamabad and Kashmir.

Torrential rain on July 22 may cause flash floods in streams and nullahs, particularly in northern areas like Swat, Dir, Kohistan, Abbottabad and Murree.

Urban flooding remains a threat in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, and other major cities. Landslides are likely in Murree, Galliyat, Chitral and Hunza, with several high-risk points identified along key highways and glacial zones.

The NDMA's National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has advised all provincial authorities, rescue services and humanitarian partners to stay on high alert.

Citizens are urged to follow instructions and download the NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time updates.

GLOF and landslide risks rising

The PMD has also warned of a heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in GB and KP, with potential flooding in valleys such as Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamer and Neelum.

The continued wet spell could exacerbate slope destabilisation, leading to rockfalls, mudslides and ground subsidence, further endangering lives and blocking access to remote areas. 来源:The Tribune

正文:

At least 13 people died, including nine children, and three were injured over the last 48 hours in monsoon rain-related incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said in a damage report on Wednesday.

Monsoon rains, which fall across the region from June to September every year, continue to lash many parts of the country, prompting authorities to release an urban flooding warning for several cities.

The monsoon death toll since the end of June surged to 234, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Heavy rains triggered flash floods in several districts of KP and Gilgit-Baltistan, damaging homes and increasing water levels in rivers and streams.

Over the last 48 hours, Swat has recorded the highest toll as six children and one woman died owing to flash floods and a house collapsing, while a woman and child were injured, the KP PDMA report said.

Three people died in Buner, which experienced heavy rain with thunder and lightning. A woman and her child died in a thunder strike, while an eight-year-old boy was swept away. “The dead body has been recovered by the locals,” the PDMA said.

Incidents caused by heavy rains in Bajaur claimed the lives of a man and a child. The victims were brothers, aged 21 and five.

“Their mother was successfully rescued while the bodies of both brothers were recovered,” the PDMA quoted the Bajaur Deputy Commissioner’s Office as saying.

Per the report, a woman also died in Upper Kohistan, while a child was injured in Torghar as heavy rains caused a roof to collapse. A total of 19 houses had been damaged due to the heavy downpour, out of which two were completely destroyed and 17 sustained partial damage.

“The current spell of heavy rains is likely to continue intermittently until July 25,” the report said.

“The PDMA has already sent a letter to all district administrations to take precautionary measures in view of the weather situation, and has directed that relief activities be intensified in affected districts to provide immediate relief to all victims,” it said.

The authority directed that all tourists be apprised of the weather and to take precautionary measures.

“The public should contact the free helpline 1700 for any untoward incident, weather situation updates and information,” the report added.

On Monday, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur directed the district administration to remain on high alert after forecasts indicated more monsoon rains in the province.

He instructed all relevant departments to take precautionary measures to deal with potential risks such as floods and landslides.

A day earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned of a heightened risk of glacial lake outburst floods (Glofs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as over 200 stranded tourists were rescued from GB’s Diamer district as heavy floods battered the region.

All tourists stranded on Babusar Highway rescued

All tourists who were stranded on the Babusar Highway have been rescued and are currently in Chilas city, according to Gilgit-Baltistan spokesperson Faizullah Faraq.

He said the search operation for those who were missing is still ongoing.

“The Karakoram Highway has been closed again at one or two points, which has left thousands of travellers stranded at various places across the highway,” Faraq said.

He noted that local private hotel owners, as well as the government, have arranged for free accommodation for tourists.“

Work is underway to restore the Silk Road up to Bisham, Faraq said.

He added that GB Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan would visit the affected area of Babusar Highway today to personally review the damage caused by flooding and see the problems faced by tourists.

The spokesperson also said that the chief minister will issue important orders regarding flood disasters and rehabilitation of the victims.

标题:10 killed as downpour triggers flash floods, landslides in KP

PESHAWAR: Ten people, including six children, were killed and two injured in rain-related incidents in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday night and Tuesday.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that six deaths were reported in Swat, two in Bajaur and one each in Buner and Upper Kohistan districts. It said among the deceased were six children and two women.

In Swat, six people, including four children, lost lives in rain-related incidents in Swat district late Monday evening as torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides in various parts of the region.

According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Shafiqa Gul, a mother and her two sons drowned in the Sur Dherai area of Malam Jabba while attempting to cross a stream.

PDMA issues Glof alert for Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan

“The mother, holding her 10-month-old baby Mohsin in her lap, was trying to guide her seven-year-old son Afwan across the stream when a flash flood struck. In the chaos, she lost control, and the child in her lap was swept away,” she said.

A Rescue 1122 rescue team, along with local residents, immediately launched a search and rescue operation, leading to the recovery of the bodies of Afwan and Mohsin hours later.

In the Gujar Band Shanko area of Madyan, a house collapsed due to heavy rainfall, killing three children and seriously injuring a woman. The house was flattened by the downpour.

After receiving an emergency call about the incident, Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the area, recovered the four from the rubble and shifted them to the Civil Hospital Madyan with the help of volunteers.

Doctors said that Madina Bibi, 11, Mustafa, 8, and Musa, 4, died, while the woman was under critical care. Local officials extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Authorities issued advisories, urging residents, especially those living in mountainous or low-lying areas, to exercise extreme caution during the ongoing monsoon season.

The district administration said it was closely monitoring weather patterns and had mobilised emergency services to respond to any incidents caused by the relentless rains.

In Bajaur tribal district, two brothers died after being swept away by downpour-induced floods in the Lowi Mamund tehsil.

The incident occurred in the Kalan area, according to Rescue 1122.

It said two sons of Ziauddin from the Ghanam Shah area were taken away by floodwaters as they’re crossing a stream on the way home on Monday night.

No one was present to rescue them, according to Ibrahim Khan of Kalan area.

However, a group of villagers, including the two brothers’ relatives and youth, launched a rescue and recovery effort.

A Rescue 1122 team joined them, leading to the recovery of the body of Gulbadeen, 23, who was married 10 days ago.

The body of Jawad Khan,12, was found the next morning, said Rescue 1122 in a statement. The two brothers were laid to rest in their native area Ghanam Shah.

Also, a man was washed away in flash floods in Deh Alami Banda of Buner district, while a woman drowned in Kandi tehsil of the district following heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, hundreds of tourists, who were stranded between Jalkhad and Babusar Top due to massive landslides on the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road, were rescued and sent to their respective areas on Tuesday.

“Though it’s a difficult task to rescue over 100 marooned families, we developed an alternative ramp and shifted them to hotels in Naran before sending them to their destinations in the country,” deputy director of the Kaghan Development Authority Asad Shahzad Khan told reporters.

He said that the rescue operation, carried out with the help of heavy machinery and field staff members, was closely monitored by tourism secretary Dr Samad and KDA director general Shabbir Khan.

The AD said machinery cleared the landslides in Jalkhad and Basel, reopening the MNJ Road to traffic throughout the Kaghan Valley.

“As heavy landslides from nearby mountains blocked the MNJ Road at multiple locations in Jalkhad and near Babusar Top, we immediately launched efforts to evacuate the stranded tourists,” he said.

A Pakistan Army helicopter also reached the Jalkhad area to provide drinking water and food items to stranded tourists.

Meanwhile, the Mansehra district administration issued a statement, warning tourists against travelling beyond Barawai on the MNJ Road due to the ongoing risk of landslides in the Kaghan Valley.

It urged tourists and other travellers to use the Karakoram Highway instead of the MNJ Road to go to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Earlier in the day, a meeting was convened by the district administration and attended by the heads of departments reviewed the emergency situation triggered by the landslides on MNJ Road in Kaghan valley.

Additional deputy commissioner (relief) Asad Lodhi informed the meeting that multiple departments, including the Pakistan Army, had provided healthcare and other essential services to the stranded families before the road was cleared to traffic.

The Karakoram Highway, which links Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Gilgit-Baltistan via the Kohistan districts, remained open to traffic throughout the day.

“Although the water level in Babusar Nullah has been rising due to flash floods, the KKH is fully operational in both Upper and Lower Kohistan districts,” Upper Kohistan deputy commissioner Tariq Ali Khan told reporters.

The PDMA on Tuesday issued an advisory about glacial lake outburst flood to the administration of five districts.

The advisory issued to deputy commissioners of Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat and Upper Kohistan said that the rainfall was likely to continue in the week.

It said scattered rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls, were expected in the province.

“The prevailing weather increases the risk of glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable glaciated regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In view of the above weather conditions, you are requested to kindly take all necessary precautionary measures to avoid any loss of public and livestock, and damage to infrastructure and crops,” the PDMA told the district administrations in the advisory.

标题:Evacuation from hundreds of Punjab villages inundated by floodwater

时间:2025-7-23 10:48:00

正文:

LAHORE: Houses and standing crops in hundreds of villages of Punjab were inundated because of low-to-medium level flooding in various rivers of the province, forcing evacuations in the affected and vulnerable areas.

A large number of residents of the affected villages were displaced, while evacuation was underway in many others as water levels in the rivers, including the Ravi, Sutlej and Indus continue to rise.

Residents are being evacuated from the katcha areas of Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan due to the rising water levels in the Chenab and Indus rivers.

Over 20 villages were witnessing floods and hundreds of acres of crops were affected in Jhang district because of the rising water levels in the river Jhelum.

The river Sutlej has seen low-level flooding at Sulemanki, while there are concerns about the potential releases of water from Indian dams on the Beas and Sutlej rivers.

People in the affected areas have been forced to move to safer places, along with their cattle, as floodwater has damaged their houses, crops and road infrastructure. The inundation of roads has made it further difficult for the people to move around and access essential services.

The authorities are urging the residents of vulnerable areas to evacuate, also providing them with assistance in evacuations.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) flood forecasting division reported that the river Indus is in low flood at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa and Guddu, while the river Chenab at Khanki is also in low flood. All other rivers, including the Ravi, Jhelum and Sutlej are flowing within their normal range.

The inflow at Khanki is 120,000 cusecs, while the outflow is 116,000 cusecs. The water flow in the river Chenab at Marala, Qadirabad and Trimmu is normal. The inflow at Kalabagh is 332,000 cusecs, while the outflow is 324,000 cusecs. The inflow at Taunsa is 363,000 while the outflow is 357,000 cusecs.

The water flow at Tarbela is 350,000 cusecs, while at Chashma it is 340,000, where the outflow is 320,000 cusecs.

As per the PDMA, there is a risk of flooding in the major rivers and their adjacent streams in Punjab from July 22 to 24. The water flow in Dera Ghazi Khan rivers and canals is normal.

Meanwhile, the Punjab PDMA has issued a low-to-medium flood alert in the Jhelum and Chenab rivers.

Water flow in the rivers is increasing due to the heavy monsoon rains and glacial melting.

PDMA Director General (DG) Irfan Ali Kathia has directed the commissioners and deputy commissioners of the concerned districts to remain alert.

He said that in view of the possible flood threat, arrangements are complete in vulnerable districts. The water level in Mangla Dam is 50 percent and in Tarbela it is 79pc.

The water level in Indian dams on Sutlej, Beas and Ravi is up to 36pc. The PDMA control room and district emergency operation centres are monitoring the situation around the clock.

Mr Kathia said that an alert has been issued to the commissioners of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions. He said an alert has also been issued to the DCs of Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Murree, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad, Sargodha, Narowal, Jhang, Kot Addo and other relevant districts. An alert of urban flooding has been issued in Rawalpindi and Gujranwala divisions, he added.
