ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Thursday forecast widespread rain-wind and thundershowers in different parts of the country on Friday, with warning of flash flood in vulnerable districts.
The PMD forecast rain in Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), north-eastern Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), and Kashmir, while 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms in Islamabad. It said that a hot and humid weather will prevail in other parts of the country, particularly in Sindh and southern Balochistan.
The PMD warned that a heavy rainfall might trigger flash flooding in local nullahs and streams in parts of K-P, including Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Kohat, Karak, Hangu, and Tank, as well as Dera Ghazi Khan, South Punjab, Murree, Galliyat, and Kashmir.
"Citizens are advised to take precautionary measures as windstorms, lightning and heavy downpours may damage vulnerable structures such as kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, solar panels, and parked vehicles," it said.
According to the PMD, significant rain was recorded during the past 24 hours. The maximum rain was recorded in Bannu which received 38 millimetres; followed by 35mm in Layyah; 29mm in Bahawalnagar; and up to 19mm in Bahawalpur.
Despite widespread rainfall, high temperatures were also recorded in several areas. Nokkundi was hottest spot in the country with mercury soaring to 45C, followed by Dalbandin at 44C, Panjgur at 43C, and Sibi at 42C.
The authorities have urged citizens, particularly in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains. The emergency services and local administrations have been put on alert to deal with any untoward situation.

The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government on Thursday declared a state of emergency in 37 flood-ravaged areas across the region following catastrophic flash floods that claimed at least 10 lives, left several tourists missing, and caused an estimated Rs20 billion in damages.
According to a notification issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Home Department, the disaster-hit designation has been applied to 12 locations in Diamer district, nine in Gilgit, five in Ghizer, four in Skardu, four in Shigar, two in Ghanche, and one each in Nagar and Kharmang.
"On account of heavy rains during Monsoon 2025, some Mouzas of District Gilgit, Ghizer, Nagar, Diamer, Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar and Kharmang have been reportedly severely affected by flash flood," said the notification issued by Home Secretary Syed Ali Asghar.
"People have suffered losses which includes loss of human lives, livestock, damage to houses, infrastructure and standing crops," it added. "In the opinion of the Government, the situation warrants action under the provision of the National Calamities (Prevention and Relief Act, 1958)."
The affected areas, according to the notification are: Parri Bangla, Jutal, Danyor, Sultanabad, Bagrote, Sharote, Shikyote, Skarkoi, Hasan Colony KIU Gilgit in Gilgit; Harchi village in Nagar; Biarchi, Thoi, Nazbar, Silpi and Khanchay in Ghizer; Kondus and Haldi sub-Division Mashabrum in Ghanche.
other areas include, Khinner, Botogah, Buner Nallah, Goner Farm, Tatto Raikot, Gushay Darel, Thak Babusar, Charat, Jhottee, Niat Valley, Thore Parika and Shatin Nullah in Diamer; Burgay and Rgiayul in Skardu; Qaimabad, Arincho and Chutron in Shigar and Torghon valley in Kharmang.
An emergency has been imposed in all these affected locations to expedite relief and rescue operations. G-B government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed the grim toll in a press briefing.
"We have tragically lost 10 people, most of whom were tourists visiting the region," Faraq stated. "Four others were injured and have been provided with medical aid," he said, adding that rescuers are engaged in a desperate search for 10 to 15 tourists who remain missing.
Floods also swept away 22 vehicles, Faraq said. In response to the crisis, the government has launched immediate rehabilitation efforts from its own resources, allocating Rs440 million for the restoration of critical water, power, and road infrastructure.
Relief aid, including tents, blankets, food items, and kitchen sets, is being distributed to displaced families. "The rehabilitation of 509 destroyed houses is under way," Faraq said, acknowledging the immense scale of the task ahead. "It is a significant challenge."
The spokesperson concluded with an appeal for federal support, expressing the hope that the national leadership would step in to assist the victims. "We hope the Prime Minister of Pakistan will help heal the wounds of the victims," Faraq said.

标题:Thousands forced out of homes as floods hit Layyah, Taunsa

LAHORE: Thousands of people in Layyah and Taunsa are forced to live under the sky as their houses and crops have been flooded after a breach in a dyke on the newly-constructed Layyah-Taunsa bridge on the Indus River.
Several villages in Layyah were flooded after a guide embankment on the Layyah-Taunsa bridge could not bear the pressure of 300000 cusecs of river water. The water entered into several villages and devastated hundred of homes and crops. The floodwater still surround the area even after the passage of six days.
In Layyah, people were evacuated from several villages with floodwater entering cultivated lands. The same situation was observed in Dera Ghazi Khan where several villages were also submerged by water.
A resident of Alliyani village, Maqbool Elahi, told Dawn that around 800,000 to 1,000,000 cusecs of water crossed these villages in the 2010 flood. That flood did not cause any harm here, but only 300,000 cusec water submerged the villages, he added.
PDMA issues another flood alert as rains continue
He claimed that the guide embankment of the bridge was constructed with substandard material, and it could not bear the water pressure and washed away.
He said the government should launch an inquiry into the matter and take action against those responsible for not ensuring the safety of the embankment.
He said that thousand of acres of crops and hundreds of houses were damaged and people were forced to live under the sky. “If the flow of the river, which subsided two days ago, would again increase, then it would cause another flood as the embankment could not bear the water pressure,” he said.
He said that people of 13 union councils were affected in Layyah due to the flood and claimed the government was not taking any measure to help them.
He said that all the crops were completely damaged, while houses in two union councils either washed away or partially damaged in 11 union councils.
Earlier, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued another flood alert as monsoon rains continue to lash various parts of the province.
The Met Office recorded 100mm rainfall at Faisalabad, 47mm at Gujranwala and 18mm at Jhang in the last 24 hours. Over the next 24 hours, rain is expected in most districts of Punjab, including Lahore and Rawalpindi. Eastern regions of the province are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. This weather system is expected to persist through Friday, particularly affecting Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur and other southern districts.
PDMA reported that Chenab River was experiencing low-level flooding at Marala, while medium-level flooding was reported at Khanki and Qadirabad. The water flow in the river had decreased compared to the previous day. The flow in the Chenab had reduced from 215,000 cusecs to 170,000 cusecs.
In the Indus River, low-level flooding was reported at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa. The water flow in the Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers was at normal levels.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said monitoring teams were working round-the-clock as the Indus River showed low-level flooding at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa.
PDMA confirmed 162 rain-related deaths this monsoon season, including four women and a child who drowned in rainwater drains. At least 558 injuries, 214 damaged homes and 121 livestock deaths have been reported across the flood-hit areas.
Punjab government had directed all deputy commissioners in vulnerable districts to remain on high alert. Rescue 1122 teams were mobilised and emergency control rooms had been established.
Earlier, the provincial cabinet committee on disaster management convened an emergency meeting chaired by Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique to review the situation.
Punjab Emergency Services Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer, Irrigation Department Secretary Wasif Khurshid, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia and senior officials from relevant departments were present.
The committee approved six anti-erosion schemes worth Rs500 million to protect vulnerable communities along the Chenab and Indus rivers.
Punjab Irrigation Department (PID) secretary also briefed about the construction of marginal embankments on the Jhelum River.
Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir said that they were implementing immediate measures to prevent riverine erosion and special de-silting campaign of river was improving drainage.

GILGIT: More cloudburst-induced floods hit Ghizer and Hunza districts on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction.
According to the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), the heavy rainfall led to flooding in Khatam village in Ghizer’s Gupis Valley, blocking the Ghizer-Shandur Road and damaging agricultural land and private properties.
The floodwaters also caused significant damage to the irrigation channel in Ghalapan village in Gojal, upper Hunza, which provides water for over 50,000 forest trees, according to residents.
The Gilgit-Baltistan government has declared 37 villages across the region as calamity-hit areas. According to a notification issued by the GB Home and Prisons Department, the affected areas include 12 villages in Diamer, nine in Gilgit, five in Ghizer, four each in Skardu and Shigar, two in Ghanche, and one each in Nagar and Kharmang.

GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said in a statement that the recent floods across Gilgit-Baltistan have caused an estimated Rs20 billion in damages. The floods have destroyed infrastructure, homes, agricultural land and public utilities.
Mr Faraq added that 22 vehicles were swept away by the floods, while 10 people, mostly tourists, have lost their lives. Four individuals have sustained injuries and between 10 and 15 tourists are still missing. Search operations are currently underway.
Over 500 homes and agricultural land, crops, roads, bridges and both public and private infrastructure have been significantly damaged.
The Gilgit-Baltistan government has initiated emergency and rehabilitation operations across the affected areas.
Pakistan has been grappling with severe flooding caused by cloudbursts, glacial lake outburst floods (Glofs) and intense monsoon rains since June. These extreme weather events have resulted in several deaths and injuries across the country, with the Gilgit-Baltistan region among the hardest hit.

标题:Glacier burst kills one in GB’s Bagrot: govt spokesperson
时间:2025-8-1 14:58:00
正文:

A glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Bagrot Valley caused the death of one person on Friday, while his father was injured, according to the regional government’s spokesperson.
A glacial burst, or glacial lake outburst flood (Glof), refers to an outburst of water from a glacial lake which could lead to severe flooding downstream. Pakistan is home to over 13,032 glaciers, the largest reservoir of glaciers outside of the polar regions. However, experts have warned that about 10,000 glaciers in Chitral and GB have been reported to be receding due to climate change–induced temperature rise.
GB’s government spokesperson, Faizullah Faraq, said that the father and son had fallen into a ravine and been buried under the debris of the Bagrot glacier as it burst, injuring both.
“Locals and Rescue 1122 saved the father while the son was killed,” he said.
Former member of the Bagrot Valley Assembly, Captain (retd) Muhammad Shafi, said that the father and son had been travelling on foot on the glacier in Barchi village when it collapsed.
“The father was rescued after several hours of efforts by the rescue team, but the son could not be rescued alive,” he said, adding that the father was transported to the hospital.
According to local journalist Imtiaz Gulab Bagoro, the father and son were from Balchi village. They were heading from Gargo village to Barchi village when the glacier collapsed.
He said that the father and son were rescued after 10 hours, while Gilgit Rescue 1122 reported that the rescue took eight hours.
The rescue team added that the son’s body had been moved to his native village of Balchi.
According to Faraq, new flash floods had “wreaked havoc in every direction” in the Khanbari area of Diamer district.

“Floods in Khanbari have destroyed people’s standing crops, lands and water channels,” he said, adding that floods were continuing across the province.
The Bagrot Valley has been a victim of climate change for the past several years, with many Glofs affecting the population.
According to non-governmental organisations (NGOs), several glacial lakes have formed in the valley.
To reduce the risks of these glacial lakes, NGOs have planted hundreds of trees in the Bagrot Valley and built protective walls with foreign aid. Early warning systems have been installed at several places in GB to inform the population about the flood situation due to climate change.
Safdar Ali, who is in charge of the information department of the Glof project, said that 200 early warning stations had been established in 16 valleys to protect the human population from flood waves due to climate change, of which 147 stations were active.
According to him, the early warning system had reported the danger in the Hassanabad nullah, but “since there was no major threat to the population, the practice of repeatedly sounding the siren did not continue”.
Ali said that the data of the early warning system was being transferred to the meteorological department, based on which weather alerts were being issued.
In June, the National Disaster Management Authority’s National Emergencies Operation Centre issued a Glof alert for northern areas, including GB, citing a dangerous combination of persistent high temperatures, intensified monsoon currents and a prevailing westerly wave.
The same month, three members of a family, including a man and his teenage son, were buried alive in a glacial slide while taking pictures at Sohni Waterfall near Naran.
Last year in August, a glacial lake outburst hit a village in Upper Chitral district, displacing 30 families.
