ISLAMABAD: The raging nullahs from Margalla hills after the rainfall have become a difficult challenge for the residents in various localities.

The rain drains passing through Chak Shahzad and Park Road are overflowing after heavy rains that have piled up feet’ deep water in the area. The rainwater has submerged localities and entered in homes.

After heavy downpour, New Chattha Bakhtawar area seems as a pond as several houses and streets drowned under the water.

The residents of locality’s streets 5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11 have severely suffered from the knee-deep rainwater.

The CDA and the NDMA have initiated a relief and rescue operation in the area.

标题:Widespread rain expected in next 24 hours

时间:2025-8-6

Rainfall is expected in most districts of Punjab during the next 24 hours, ARY News reported on Wednesday, citing the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

According to PDMA spokesperson, the sixth spell of monsoon rains is forecast to continue until August 7.

Director General of PDMA Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, has instructed district administrations to remain on high alert during this period.

The DG PDMA stated that the Indus River at Tarbela is currently experiencing low-level flooding, while water flow at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa remains at normal levels. Similarly, water levels in rivers Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej are also within normal ranges.

Additionally, water flow in hill torrents and streams linked to major rivers is stable and not posing any immediate threat. Tarbela Dam is currently filled up to 95% of its capacity, whereas Mangla Dam has reached 62% capacity.

The PDMA further reported that, due to monsoon-related incidents this year, 164 individuals have lost their lives across the province.

In the past 24 hours alone, three people sustained injuries in rain-related accidents.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to exercise caution, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center has issued a hydrological alert regarding the potential flood situation in River Sutlej.

According to NEOC, monsoon currents are actively penetrating upper and central parts of Pakistan, and a westerly trough persists over the northern areas. As a result, scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted between 5th and 7th August 2025, contributing to increasing river flows.

Resultantly, warning has been issued of a rising trend in water discharge due to ongoing monsoon activity and upstream rainfall in the catchment areas across the border.

As of 5 August 2025, River Sutlej’s discharge at downstream Ferozepur (Ganda Singh Wala) rose sharply from 28,657 to 33,653 cusecs within an hour, indicating an upward trend.

标题:Flood warnings issued for major Punjab rivers

时间:2025-8-6 8:43:00

正文:

RAWALPINDI / LAHORE: A fresh forecast has been issued for rainfall and flooding in major rivers as water inflows increase due to heavy downpour in northern areas and across the border.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a hydrological alert for flooding in the Sutlej river due to increased water discharge after rainfall in catchment areas.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for flooding in Chenab, Sutlej, Ravi and adjacent rivers from Aug 5 to 8.

The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of NDMA has said monsoon currents are “actively penetrating” upper and central parts of Pakistan, and a “westerly trough persists over the northern areas”.

On Thursday, the discharge of water in the Sutlej river downstream of Ferozepur (Ganda Singh Wala) increased sharply from 28,657 to 33,653 cusecs within an hour.

While this intake is normal, the water flow is anticipated to increase due to heavy rainfall over Sutlej and Beas catchments in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh regions of India and the occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

India is also releasing water from the Pong Dam built on the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh. The Bhakra Dam — on Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh— and Pong Dam are currently at 55 per cent and 56 per cent storage capacity, respectively.

According to Indian media, the water level in the reservoirs is increasing and may lead to additional releases in the coming days.

This could lead to a low-level flood in the Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala during the current week.

Urban flooding

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also warned that moderate and intermittent rainfall is expected to increase river levels to low-flood conditions.

According to the PMD’s flood bulletins, the Indus river is currently in a low-flood state at Tarbela, Guddu and Sukkur, while other major rivers have normal flow levels.

The nullahs (streams) of the Ravi river may reach low to medium flood levels in the next 36 hours, the PMD said, warning of possible urban flooding in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore and Islamabad over the next two days.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasised the need for all relevant departments, including local government, agriculture, irrigation, health, and transport, to stay on high alert.

Fresh rainfall

The PMD stated that due to heavy rainfall on Aug 6, an increase in water flow is expected in local nullahs and streams in Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.

Heavy falls may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Peshawar and Nowshera in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Meanwhile, landslides and mudslides are expected in vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, Murree and Galiyat.

The sixth spell of monsoon rains is expected to persist until Aug 7, with gradual weakening thereafter, the Met Department said.

At least 71 people have died — over half of them children — and another 86 have been injured in rain-related incidents across Khyber Paktunkhwa since the start of the monsoon season in late June, according to the latest figures by KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Monsoon rains, which fall across the region from June to September every year, continue to lash many parts of the country. Starting in late June, Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across the country in the past month by triggering deadly floods, landslides and displacement, particularly in vulnerable, poorly drained, or densely populated areas.

According to the latest data provided by KP PDMA, the total death toll from rain-related incidents this monsoon season stands at 71, out of which 40 are children, 17 men and 14 women.

Swat district recorded the highest number of lives lost, at 22, during heavy rains. According to PDMA, most of the deaths occurred due to floods, landslides and infrastructure collapse.

On June 27, 17 people, mostly tourists, went missing after unprecedented flash floods struck areas of Swat and Malakand divisions. 12 bodies were recovered, four people were rescued, and the dead body of one person remains missing, according to PDMA. The delay in rescue efforts sparked outrage across the country.

According to the PDMA report, on July 21, a woman died after drowning in a nullah while two children were swept away and reported dead. The same day, three children died after the roof of their house collapsed in the Bahrain tehsil of Swat.

The total death toll, broken down district-wise, currently stands at: Swat (22), Buner (4), Malakand (5), Charsadda (3), Upper Dir (3), Torghar (2), Mansehra (3), Hangu (2), Khyber (3), Abbotabad (5), Shangla (2), Bajaur (3), Lower Kohistan (2), Lakki Marwat (3), Battagram (2).

Karak, Haripur, Upper Kohistan, Nowshera and Kohat recorded one death each.

The report estimated that a total of 86 people have been injured in rain-related incidents across the province, including 38 men, 15 women and 33 children.

Detailing the infrastructure damage, the report recorded the total number of houses damaged at 358, out of which 54 were destroyed completely. The highest number of houses destroyed was in Swat at 63, followed by 38 in Karak and 22 in Buner.

The number of cattle that perished as a result of the rain was 142.

Meanwhile, PDMA has issued a rainfall alert for KP today, forecasting isolated rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 12 -24 hours in parts of the province, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Mansehra, Battagram, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Noshwera, Peshawar, Charsada, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Parachinar, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.

In a statement issued on Sunday, KP PDMA directed the district administrations and other relevant organisations to remain on high alert as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast more intermittent to heavy rains, wind, and thunderstorms across KP from August 4 to 7.
