The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast the next spell of monsoon rains from August 13 and issued a flood advisory.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, advisories have been issued for the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum rivers, as well as adjacent streams and nullahs, warning of potential flooding due to the rains.
The PDMA warned that water levels in major rivers across Punjab could rise during the seventh spell of monsoon rains.
Commissioners, deputy commissioners and relevant departments across the province have been instructed to remain on alert.
Departments placed on high alert include local government, agriculture, irrigation, health, forests, livestock and transport.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia directed all departments to complete preparations in advance in line with the Punjab Chief Minister’s instructions.
He said staff at emergency control rooms must remain on duty 24 hours a day and Rescue 1122’s disaster response teams should also stay on high alert.
Authorities have been instructed to keep the public updated on the situation, ensure the evacuation of houses and livestock from riverbeds, and encourage compliance with issued safety measures.
Appealing to the public, the DG advised against swimming in rivers, canals, streams and ponds, and urged cooperation with authorities in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Citizens have been told to contact PDMA’s helpline 1129 in case of emergencies.

At least eight volunteers were killed and several others feared trapped when a landslide hit a flood-damaged water channel in Gilgit's Danyor Nullah during repair work, police said on Monday.
The volunteers were restoring the channel when a mass of earth collapsed, burying them under debris, said police.
Hospital sources confirmed all the dead were members of a local volunteer team, while three others were injured.
As the search goes on for more survivors, the authorities have declared an emergency at local hospitals.
A provincial government spokesperson said accelerated glacial melt, driven by climate change, had increased water flow in several streams.

The Shishper glacier recently flooded, damaging farmland and closing part of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) towards Hunza. Traffic was being diverted via Nagar Road.
Officials have warned of further rains and landslides in the region.
A significant stretch of the KKH in Upper Hunza’s Morkhun area was destroyed by river erosion, severing the overland link between Pakistan and China, the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government said.
"River erosion remains a key contributor to highway blockages in the region," a cryosphere expert told The Express Tribune. "Although disruptions on the KKH are not unusual, the current intensity of river swelling and the scale of damage are significantly higher."

G-B government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed that the increased river flow led to the erosion of a section of the KKH, rendering it impassable.
Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has directed the immediate restoration of the highway.
Earlier, authorities warned of possible flooding in local streams and nullahs in Dera Ghazi Khan, northeastern and upper Punjab, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, northeastern Balochistan, Kashmir, Chitral, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Murree, Galiyat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Swabi, Nowshera, and Mardan.
There is also a high risk of landslides in K-P’s hilly areas, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir and G-B, potentially disrupting road networks and communications.

The PDMA has issued low flood alert in Sutlej River.
Flood Forecasting Division has cautioned against likely low flood at Ganda Singh Wala headworks during next 72 hours.
An upsurge in Sutlej water level being witnessed as the river flow has reached to 29,000 cusecs at Ganda Singh Wala.
Fresh monsoon spell from August 13 could enhance water level in major rivers of Punjab, a spokesman of PDMA said.
The disaster management authority has directed the divisional and district administrations and concerned departments to keep alert ahead of the fresh spell of rainfall.
DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has also advised general public to follow the issued safety measures.
India had recently released water into Chenab River suddenly, which surged the water level in the river to 1,66,796 cusecs at Qadir Abad.
Flooding in the river feared to affect several villages in the vicinity of Jalalpur Bhattian.
The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) said that India’s sudden water release into Chenab, increased the river water level to medium flood at Marala headworks.
The river water flow has surged to 1,76,000 cusecs at the Head Marala, the FFD stated while apprehending further surge in the water flow in Chenab.

Eight local volunteers were killed in a massive landslide while repairing the flood-damaged Danyor Nullah in Gilgit, ARY News reported on Monday, quoting rescue officials.
Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where emergency services have been placed on high alert.
Rescue teams, assisted by local residents, are still searching for people believed to be trapped beneath the debris.
According to eyewitness accounts, the landslide struck suddenly as the volunteers were working to restore the damaged water channel.
Tonnes of earth and rocks buried multiple individuals, with police confirming that four people were pulled out alive but in critical condition.
Earlier, the NHA team cleared the road at KM 161 in Jalkhad, previously blocked by a landslide, and restored traffic flow.
On the same day, the team temporarily reconstructed the Looshi Bridge, which had been washed away due to heavy rains and landslides, and reopened it to traffic, ensuring continued movement on the route.
The road at Tatta Pani earlier affected by a landslide was cleared again. This section had previously been reopened by NHA teams two days prior but was blocked once more by another landslide.

标题:7 dead, 6 injured in GB’s Danyor as landslide hits volunteers restoring water supply
时间:2025-8-11 16:07:00
正文:

At least seven volunteers died and six were injured early on Monday when a landslide hit individuals working at a water channel in Gilgit-Baltistan’s (GB) Danyor city, rescue officials said.
The devastating impacts of climate change and melting glaciers have become more visible in GB, which has been facing heavy rains since late June.
The situation worsened when deadly floods swept across the Babusar area on July 21, causing landslides and damaging infrastructure. So far, 10 deaths have been confirmed across the region, with a dozen tourists missing.
Thirteen volunteers, mainly young people, were attempting to restore the water supply in the main water channel from Danyor nullah to Danyor town, which had been damaged due to the recent floods, when the landslide hit at 2am today.
“Thirteen volunteers restoring the water supply were buried under the rubble,” Gilgit’s Rescue 1122 said in a statement.
Stating the casualties, it said the injured were taken to a hospital. District Emergency Officer (operations) Abdul Basit was present at the site to supervise the restoration, Rescue 1122 added.
Muhammad Akbar, one of the residents who took part in the rescue operations, told Dawn.com that the bodies and injured had been moved to “various hospitals in Gilgit and Danyor”.
On July 22, a flash flood in Danyor nullah inundated residential communities and damaged crops and irrigation channels. The deluge also damaged link roads and suspension bridges, cutting road links to affected areas.
Hussain Akbar Shah, another local, said thousands of Danyor residents were facing a shortage of drinking water and irrigation water as the valley depended on water from the nullah.
A statement by the GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq stated that the total number of volunteers was 15, out of whom seven were confirmed dead.
An emergency has been declared at hospitals in Gilgit, the spokesperson added. “Our hearts are saddened by this unfortunate accident. Gilgit is in a state of mourning,” Faraq said.
Residents protest against govt ‘inaction’

Funeral prayers were later held for the volunteers who died in the incident. Residents also protested at Danyor Chowk against the incident, holding the government responsible for it.
Speaking to reporters, area elders led by former GB minister Muhammad Iqbal said the government had failed to restore the disrupted water supply despite repeated assurances.
The elders noted that although residents had managed to temporarily restore the pipeline, subsequent flooding destroyed it again, while the government had not started work on it. The protesters demanded that the government take action, or they would launch protests.
GB Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan expressed his condolences on the incident and announced compensation for the bereaved families.
“The families of those who died in the Danyor nullah [incident] will receive compensation as per the government policy,” CM Gulbar said, directing that the wounded be provided with the best medical treatment.
Social activist Ghulam Abbas also blamed the government’s alleged negligence, explaining that the incident might not have occurred if the government had restored the water channel.
Abbas also said that besides the seven volunteers who died in the landslide, one had lost his life due to a heart attack.
Dildar Hussain, another resident, called the incident “regrettable”. Echoing others’ complaints of damages caused by floods, he said, “No one did anything for restoration.”
“This situation is proof of government incompetence,” he said. “The responsibility for the lives lost lies with the government,” Dildar asserted.
Prominent lawyer Wazir Ibadat said that despite crops and trees being destroyed by the flooding, the water management had done nothing to restore the channel.
Ibadat said that people had to start the restoration work themselves, and as a result, precious lives were lost. He demanded an investigation into the matter and action against those responsible.
