The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high-alert advisory for a strong monsoon system expected to hit the country from August 14 to 22.

The last rain spell left over 300 dead and scores injured across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Punjab, with most fatalities attributed to electrocution and roof collapses.

The new system is likely to bring widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers, with heavy to very heavy falls predicted in parts of Punjab, Islamabad, K-P and Gilgit-Baltistan between August 18 to 21.

Balochistan and Sindh are also expected to receive rain, with isolated heavy showers from August 18 to 21.

The PMD had earlier forecast rains from August 13 to 15, but later revised its advisory predicting rains to include a longer time frame.

The department warned of potential flash floods in hilly streams, urban flooding in major cities, and landslides in mountainous areas.

Rivers and reservoirs

The rivers Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab are expected to receive heavy inflows, with the Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala likely to remain at low flood levels over the next three days but with the potential to rise further due to rainfall and releases from Indian reservoirs.

Medium to high flood levels are possible in rivers Chenab, Khanki, and Qadirabad, along with nullahs of River Ravi, while the Indus at Taunsa is expected to see increased water flow in the next 24 hours.

PMD urged respective river authorities to take precautionary measures besides directing travellers and residents in vulnerable zones have been advised to remain alert and follow official updates.

Pakistan’s major reservoirs recorded a slight increase in water levels over the past 24 hours as weak monsoon activity continued in the country’s upper regions, the latest data showed.

According to official figures issued on August 12, the Tarbela reservoir rose by 0.5 feet to 1,546.50 feet, just 3.5 feet below its maximum capacity of 1,550 feet.

Mangla increased by 0.3 feet to 1,206.50 feet, compared to its full capacity of 1,242 feet. Khanpur also rose 0.5 feet to 1,975.20 feet, while Simly remained stable at 2,284.85 feet.

Rawal Dam was the only reservoir to register a decline, falling 1.8 feet to 1,749.40 feet below its full capacity of 1,752 feet.

GILGIT:

At least eight volunteers were killed and several others are feared trapped when a landslide struck a flood-damaged water channel in Gilgit's Danyor Nullah during repair work, police said on Monday.

The volunteers were working to restore the channel when a mass of earth suddenly collapsed, burying them under debris, according to police.

Hospital sources confirmed that all those killed were members of a local volunteer team, while three others sustained injuries.

As the search for more survivors continued, authorities declared an emergency in local hospitals. A provincial government spokesperson said accelerated glacial melt, driven by climate change, had increased water flow in several streams across the region.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief over the incident, offering sympathies and condolences to the families of the deceased volunteers.

In a statement, he paid tribute to those "who sacrificed their lives for the sake of humanity".

"The entire nation is grieved over the loss of precious lives in the tragedy," he said and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Shishper glacier recently flooded, damaging farmland and closing a section of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) towards Hunza. Traffic has been diverted via Nagar Road, while officials warned of more rain and landslides.

A significant stretch of the KKH in Upper Hunza's Morkhun area has also been destroyed by river erosion, severing the overland link between Pakistan and China, the Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government confirmed.

"River erosion remains a key contributor to highway blockages in the region," a cryosphere expert told The Express Tribune. "Although disruptions on the KKH are not unusual, the current intensity of river swelling and the scale of damage are significantly higher."

G-B government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said the increased river flow led to the collapse of a section of the KKH, rendering it impassable. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has directed the immediate restoration of the route.

Earlier, authorities issued alerts for possible flooding in local streams and nullahs in Dera Ghazi Khan, northeastern and upper Punjab, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, northeastern Balochistan, Kashmir, Chitral, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Murree, Galiyat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Swabi, Nowshera and Mardan.

They also warned of a high risk of landslides in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's hilly areas, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir and G-B, with the potential to disrupt road networks and communications.

标题:PMD forecasts more rains, thundershowers across country from Aug 17 as monsoon activity intensifies

时间:2025-8-12 18:31:00

正文:

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday forecast widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers in most parts of the country in the coming days, with monsoon activity expected to intensify from August 17.

At least 312 people, including 142 children, have died and 740 others have been injured in flash floods and torrential rains that have battered several parts of Pakistan since late June, according to updated daily data from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The NDMA said the deluges, which began on June 26, have left a trail of devastation across the country. The dead include 113 men, 57 women and 142 children, while the injured include 243 children, 209 women and 288 men.

In its latest weather advisory issued today, the Met Office said monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea were continuously penetrating the upper parts of Pakistan, while moist currents from the Bay of Bengal were likely to strengthen midweek.

A westerly wave currently affecting the region was also expected to intensify from Aug 17.

Under these conditions, rain-wind/thundershower with scattered heavy falls was expected in Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan from Aug 14 -17.

The wet spell was expected to last from Aug 18-21 in many northern areas, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, and several districts of GB.

From Aug 18-21, KP would witness widespread rains, with heavy to very heavy falls in districts such as Dir, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar and Mardan.

Southern districts, including Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan, would also receive showers with occasional heavy spells.

Punjab, including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad, was likely to experience heavy rains from Aug 18-21, with scattered activity in southern districts.

Parts of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Zhob, Khuzdar, Gwadar, and Panjgur, as well as several Sindh districts, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Tharparkar, were also expected to receive showers between Aug 18-22.

The PMD warned that heavy rains may generate flash floods in local streams and nullahs of KP, Murree, Galliyat, northeast Punjab and AJK from Aug 15-21, and hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and eastern Balochistan from Aug 18-21.

Urban flooding was also expected in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar, and Nowshera during the same period.

Landslides and mudslides might disrupt roads in hilly areas of KP, GB, Murree, Galliyat, and AJK, while heavy falls, windstorms, and lightning may damage weak structures such as rooftops, walls of mudhouses, electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels.

The public, travellers and tourists were advised to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain updated about the latest weather conditions.

All relevant authorities were urged to stay on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.

标题:Rains, flood warning issued in Punjab as India set to release water

时间:2025-8-12 9:52:00

正文:

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a critical flood alert in the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum and its adjoining tributaries, as Punjab is likely to brave the seventh spell of monsoon rains starting on Wednesday (tomorrow).

The authority also mentioned the possibility of a low-level flood in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala with the expected release of water by India in next three days. The flow of water in the Sutlej River may increase due to the release of water from the upper reservoirs. There has been an unusual increase in the water level in Indian dams during the last week.

PDMA Punjab has issued an alert to the commissioners of Lahore, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan. An alert has also been issued to the deputy commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan.

PDMA issues alerts for Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan; low-level flood expected in Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala

The warning follows scattered rainfall across Punjab, with Gujranwala’s Sheranwala Bagh recording 42mm rainfall — the highest in 24 hours — while Rawalpindi and Chakwal receiving 19mm and 16mm of rainfall, respectively.

The PDMA also warned that the renewed wave of showers may trigger urban flooding in some cities and hill torrents in southern regions.

With Tarbela Dam at 96pc capacity and Mangla at 64pc, Punjab remains on high alert for the incoming weather system that could test the flood management infrastructure and the province’s response mechanism amid cross-border water releases during the seventh and potentially most dangerous spell of this rainy season.

According to PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej River has been filled up to 61pc. Water storage in Pong Dam is around 76pc while the Thein Dam is filled up to 64pc.

Besides Punjab PDMA, Indus River System Authority and the provincial irrigation department are monitoring the rivers situation round the clock.

The fresh alert has been issued to the local government, agriculture department, irrigation department, health department, forest department, livestock and transport department as well.

Mr Kathia issued instructions to the relevant departments to be vigilant and staff in emergency control rooms should remain alert 24 hours a day. All necessary arrangements must be completed in advance, he said, adding that disaster response teams of Rescue 1122 must be on their toes with regular updates to the public regarding the situation.

He advised people to follow precautions and cooperate with the administration in case of emergency evacuation. He warned people to stay away from rivers, canals, streams and ponds.
