标题:Another monsoon wave to hit this week
时间:2025-8-13
正文:

ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday forecast a fresh spell of widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers across most parts of the country in the coming days, with monsoon activity expected to intensify from August 17.
According to the Met Office, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the upper parts of the country, while moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are likely to strengthen midweek. A westerly wave affecting the region is also expected to intensify from August 17.
Under these conditions, rain, wind, and thundershowers with scattered heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Kashmir, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) from August 14 to 17.
The wet spell will persist from August 18 to 21 in several northern areas, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, and districts of G-B. From August 18 to 21, widespread rains are expected in K-P, with heavy to very heavy falls likely in Dir, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, and Mardan.
Southern districts — Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan — will also experience showers with occasional heavy spells.
Punjab, including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad, is likely to receive heavy rains from August 18 to 21, with scattered activity in southern districts, according to the PMD.
Parts of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Zhob, Khuzdar, Gwadar, and Panjgur, as well as several Sindh districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Tharparkar, are also expected to see showers between August 18 and 22.
GLOF alert
In view of the forecast, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of K-P issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) alert, warning of possible flooding in glaciated areas of the province. The PDMA cautioned that heavy and intermittent rains could cause glacial lakes to burst in vulnerable northern districts, including Upper and Lower Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan.
The PDMA has also warned of landslides and flash floods in local streams and nullahs in these areas, advising the public to avoid unnecessary movement near water channels and to refrain from driving vehicles through fast-flowing streams.
The National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and the Communication and Works Department have been instructed to remain on standby for road clearance and other emergency measures.
The PDMA has also launched a public awareness campaign to inform residents about precautionary measures, while its Emergency Operation Centre remains fully operational. Citizens can report incidents or seek information through the helpline 1700.
Flooding and landslides risk
The PMD cautioned that heavy rains may trigger flash floods in K-P, Murree, Galliyat, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir from August 15 to 21, as well as hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and eastern Balochistan from August 18 to 21. Urban flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar, and Nowshera during this period.
Landslides and mudslides may disrupt roads in hilly areas of K-P, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, and Kashmir, while heavy falls, windstorms, and lightning could damage weak structures, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.
“All concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation,” the PMD said. The public, travellers, and tourists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain updated on the latest weather conditions.
Death toll rises
At least 312 people, including 142 children, have died and 740 others have been injured in flash floods and torrential rains since late June, according to updated data from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The fatalities include 113 men, 57 women, and 142 children, while the injured comprise 243 children, 209 women, and 288 men. The NDMA said the deluges, which began on June 26, have left a trail of destruction across the country. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

标题:New flash flood halts work on KKH in Hunza’s Gulmit Gojal area
时间:2025-8-13 17:41:00
正文:

A new torrent of waves on Wednesday halted repair efforts on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) in Hunza’s Gulmit Gojal area while thousands of people, including tourists, remained stranded at multiple locations as rehabilitation work is underway across Gilgit-Baltistan following glacial flooding.
The devastating impacts of climate change and melting glaciers have become more visible in GB, which has been facing heavy rains since late June. Thousands of people were stranded after rain-induced floods had blocked roads late last month.
On Sunday, a glacial lake outburst flood (Glof) from the Shishper Glacier tore through Hassanabad Nullah, sweeping away part of KKH and destroying infrastructure.
A statement by Rescue 1122 said today: “The restoration work on KKH has stopped as fresh waves of a flash flood hit Juchar Nullah in Gulmit Gojal in Hunza.”
In a statement earlier today, GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said that rehabilitation work was underway in flood-affected areas across GB.
“Rehabilitation work on KKH is in full swing at Gulmit Gujal. Passengers and vehicles are waiting for the road to be restored on both sides of KKH,” he said, adding that the stranded people were being evacuated through an alternative route of a wooden bridge.
He said that the GB chief minister has directed to speed up the rehabilitation work in Shigar, Ghizer, Hunza, Gilgit, Astore, Diamer, and other areas.
The spokesperson highlighted the impact of climate change-induced disasters on the region, stating, “The rehabilitation work is facing difficulties due to increasing water flow, river erosion and landslides.”
According to the local administration of Hunza’s Gojal area, thousands of passengers, including local and foreign tourists, travelling through this area and China through Khunjerab, remained stranded on both sides as there is no alternative route.
The flood also damaged the optical fibre of mobile and internet services in the area, the administration said, adding, “The increasing water level in the Khunjerab River damaged the electricity transmission near Sost town which caused electricity disruption in areas.”
It also said that heavy machinery was mobilised to restore traffic at KKH.
Separately, a massive flash flood occurred in Juchar Nullah in Hunza’s Gulmit Gojal area after heavy glacial melting on Tuesday evening, according to a statement by Rescue 1122.
The statement said, “The flash flood intensity was high. The flood damaged a bridge and washed away a portion of KKH.”
It said that the flood also swept away thousands of kanals land, trees, irrigation channels, and private and public infrastructure in the Gulmit area.
The statement added that a famous restaurant near KKH, a government-owned tourist facilitation centre and other infrastructures were washed away in the flood.
“The flood destroyed thousands of kanals of forest and fruit trees, orchards, three link roads, three wooden bridges, five irrigation channels, electricity and internet poles,” it added.
Rescue 1122 further said that over 50 locals, who were working on the restoration of water channels, narrowly escaped the flood. “Around 60–70 people repairing water channels narrowly escaped after a last-minute warning from someone who spotted dust clouds racing ahead of the torrent,” it said.
A local named Saeed Jan told Dawn.com that the floods were “unprecedented” as locals never experienced such intense flooding in the nullah. He said, “Floods occurred 20 times in the nullah today with heavy boulders, mud and debris sweeping away everything downstream.”
Earlier this month, cloudburst-induced floods hit Ghizer and Hunza districts, causing widespread destruction to forests, agricultural land, irrigation channels and private properties.
On July 21, heavy rain prompted deadly floods across the Babusar area, causing landslides and damaging infrastructure. So far, 10 deaths have been confirmed across the region, with a dozen tourists missing.

标题:Bridge buckles after flood in Dek rainwater drain
时间:2025-8-13 10:27:00
正文:

NAROWAL/LAHORE: The Hanjali Bridge connecting Zafarwal with Sialkot has collapsed due to the rapid flow of water in the Dek rainwater drain, following heavy rainfall in India-held Kashmir.
The bridge, located on the Zafarwal-Chawinda Road in tehsil Zafarwal, served as a daily route for hundreds of citizens and workers traveling to and from Sialkot. The collapse was caused by the failure of the bridge’s central pillars due to overwhelming water pressure.
No casualties have been reported. Upon receiving information, the Pasrur assistant commissioner, along with his team, immediately halted traffic and sealed off the bridge with soil barriers, reflectors and deployment of police and rescue personnel on its both ends.
The Sialkot district administration remained unaware of the bridge’s collapse for over 15 hours, reportedly due to confusion over jurisdiction. The Sialkot administration considered it part of Narowal while Narowal authorities insisted it fell within Sialkot.
Deputy Commissioner Narowal Syed Hassan Raza visited the site and directed transport owners to use alternative routes. The Sialkot deputy commissioner also arrived later. He has now demanded a detailed report from the relevant department.
Flood wreaks havoc in Sialkot and Narowal; heavy rains predicted in most districts of Punjab till 15th
The Hanjali Bridge was affected by the passage of more than 22,000 cusecs of water in Nullah Dek.
Provincial Disaster Management Authority Director General Irfan Ali Kathia contacted the secretary C&W, Provincial Highway Department and other officials. He said that the C&W and other district officers were present in the field.
The construction of Hanjali Bridge was completed in 1980 and is 720 feet long, he said and added that the repair of the affected part would be completed as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, severe flooding continues to wreak havoc across the region of Sialkot and Narowal. In Jestiwala village, Narowal, rapid soil erosion and a breached protective dam have placed dozens of villages at risk of submersion. The Narowal deputy commissioner, along with teams from the irrigation department, Rescue 1122 and civil defence, visited the area and initiated emergency measures. Trees were felled and sandbags were used to strengthen weak points along the rain drain.
In tehsil Pasrur (Sialkot), the safety dam near village Garar Bariyar also collapsed due to the surging Dek drain, submerging hundreds of acres of farmland. Villages affected include Kala Pahar, Rupowali, Klaswali, Panjgrai, Mandipur, Gagge, Aqi Machhi, Pan, and Udoftah. The rice crop has suffered severe damage.
Relief and repair efforts are underway. The district administrations have set up nine Rescue 1122 posts and placed all departments on high alert. A 24-hour flood monitoring system is active in the Narowal control room. Water levels at Head Marala on the Chenab River reached 175,000 cusecs on Monday evening, up from 45,000 cusecs just a day earlier.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation as heavy rains and cross-border water inflows threaten to escalate the crisis further.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) jointly predicted flooding in rivers of Punjab due to rains in the upper areas and possible release of water into the Sutlej River by India in a day.
The PMD and PDMA reported that an unusual increase in the water level was recorded in Indian dams, including Bhakra Dam that was filled up to 61pc, Pong Dam 76pc and Thein Dam was filled to 64pc.
Flooding at Ganda Singh in the Sutlej River returned to normal from low levels but there was a risk of further increase in the flow of the river. A warning of medium to high level flooding was issued at Marala Khanki and Qadirabad in the Chenab River.
The PDMA Punjab, Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and irrigation department are monitoring the situation of rivers and dams 24/7.
The PDMA Punjab has issued instructions to the commissioners, deputy commissioners and relevant departments to remain alert for the seventh spell of monsoon rains. Heavy monsoon rains are predicted in most districts of Punjab from August 13 to 15.
Heavy rains are likely in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore and Dera Ghazi Khan. Heavy torrential rains are predicted in the upper reaches of the Indus, Chenab, Sutlej, Jhelum and Ravi rivers.
There is a risk of landslides in Murree and Galiyat due to heavy rains. There is a risk of damage to mud houses and dilapidated buildings due to rains. Passengers and tourists should be careful in view of the weather conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.
The PDMA reported the risk of urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Sialkot and flash flooding in the rivers adjacent to major rivers due to heavy rains.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said that citizens in the river basins should immediately move to safe places. In case of emergency evacuation, cooperate with the administration, he said and requested the public to take precautionary measures and aboid bathing in rivers, canals, streams and ponds and avoid picnics and unnecessary crossings near rivers in flood situations.
The PDMA Punjab also issued instructions to civil defence, rescue and related agencies to complete advance arrangements. Staff in emergency control rooms should be kept on alert. Disaster response teams of Rescue 1122 should also be kept on high alert. The public should follow the precautionary measures issued. Stay in safe places in case of urban and flash flooding. Never cross the vehicle through flowing water.
