At least 310 people have died and 23 sustained injuries across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) during the past 48 hours of heavy rains and flash floods, the Rescue 1122 spokesperson said Saturday.
Buner was the worst-hit district with 184 fatalities, followed by Shangla with 36, Bajaur 21, Mansehra 23, Swat 22, Battagram 15, Lower Dir five, and Abbottabad one, according to PDMA.
The spokesperson Bilal Faizi said the deceased included 281 men, 15 women, and 14 children. Infrastructure losses were also recorded, with 11 houses fully damaged and 63 partially damaged, along with schools and bridges washed away in several districts.
He added that the death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are recovered from the debris of collapsed homes.
Faizi said there was a cloud burst in Buner early on Friday creating a torrent of water that swept down to the villages below. "There was no time for anyone to react," Faizi said.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the destruction caused by cloudbursts and flash floods in K-P and northern parts of the country.
In a post on X, he offered condolences to the bereaved families and said the nation stood in solidarity with those affected.
He added that the government was mobilising all available resources to support rescue and relief efforts.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that civilian and military teams were carrying out rescue and relief operations, while the prime minister had chaired an emergency meeting.
Provincial Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah said that local officials had been dispatched to the flooded areas to supervise relief operations and assess the damage.
He said medical camps were being set up for the flood victims, along with arrangements to provide food for families who lost their homes.
Emergency declared in worst-hit areas
The K-P Relief Department has issued an emergency notification in response to the ongoing monsoon rains and flooding across several districts.
Emergency has been declared in the districts of Swat, Battagram, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, and Kohistan. According to the notification, Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts have been directed to immediately initiate relief and rescue operations.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has been tasked with providing necessary machinery and relief goods to the affected areas.

The Relief Department stated that urgent assistance will be extended to the impacted populations. The emergency will remain in effect from August 15 to August 31, 2025.
Meanwhile, rescue operations are under way in Buner, where efforts continue across three tehsils.
Reports suggest several people are trapped under debris, a rescue spokesperson said. The operation continued throughout the night, and debris removal has begun in the affected areas.

Moreover, flood relief operations by the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps are ongoing in Buner, Swat, and Bajaur. Army teams remain engaged in relief activities in flood-hit districts. Helicopters are delivering rations and other essential supplies, while evacuations to safe locations are under way.

Flood relief operation
Additional contingents of the Pakistan Army have reached Buner to reinforce ongoing relief operations in flood-affected districts.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Army Corps of Engineers is deploying specialised equipment to recover injured individuals and bodies trapped under mud.
Helicopters are being used to deliver rations and other essential supplies, while residents from inundated areas are being evacuated to safer locations.
The army stated that the operation would continue until all affected people are rescued and relocated to secure shelters.
Similarly, following the collapse of a critical bridge connecting Bajaur and Dir due to flooding, the Pakistan Army has initiated work on the installation of a new bridge.
Troops from the Army’s Corps of Engineers, equipped with the necessary machinery and supplies, have been dispatched to Bajaur to begin the construction process.
According to military officials, the installation of the new bridge is expected to be completed within a few days. The engineering units will continue working round the clock to ensure timely completion.
Once the new bridge is constructed by the Pakistan Army, the severed link between Bajaur and Dir will be immediately restored.
National response mobilised
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has dispatched a team to Peshawar to oversee relief operations in flood-hit areas of K-P, on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to NDMA, full support is being provided to the provincial government, including the supply of relief goods. The NDMA chairman briefed the prime minister on the situation last evening.
NDMA said it is in constant coordination with civil and military institutions and is monitoring ongoing relief efforts round-the-clock. It warned of an increased risk of landslides in northern areas due to expected rains and urged people to remain cautious. Tourists have been advised to avoid traveling to the region for the next five to six days.
COAS issues directives for rehabilitation of flood victims
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has issued instructions for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people in K-P, Radio Pakistan reported.
COAS has directed that military personnel deployed in the province fully assist in rehabilitation efforts. Additional troops are also being dispatched for the purpose.
Pakistan Army has donated one day’s salary for rehabilitation and allocated one day’s ration — amounting to over 600 tons — for flood victims in the province.
The Corps of Engineers has been instructed to expedite the repair of damaged bridges and establish temporary ones where required.
The Army’s 9th Unit Rescue Sniffing Dog Unit is being deployed for search and rescue operations, while the Special Urban Search and Rescue Team has also been sent on the directives of the COAS.
ETEA postpones exam
All Education Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA) tests scheduled for today in flood-affected areas of Upper and Lower Dir, as well as Chitral, have been postponed.
The examinations could not be held due to heavy rains and flooding in the affected districts, according to ETEA officials
The ETEA Director said that new dates for the postponed tests will be announced later, adding that all decisions will be made keeping in view the convenience of students once the situation improves.
Chopper crashes in bad weather
A K-P government helicopter delivering flood relief supplies crashed in a tribal district yesterday, killing all five crew members, provincial officials said.
The MI-17 aircraft went down in Mohmand district while en route to the flood-hit Salarzai area of Bajaur district, after losing contact in bad weather, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur told reporters. The dead included two pilots.
Search teams later located the wreckage in Pandiali tehsil of Mohmand, CM Gandapur said, confirming there were no survivors. The provincial government declared a day of mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast, and said the crew would be buried with full state honours.
"These individuals lost their lives while helping others during this crisis," the chief minister said. "Their sacrifice will be remembered."

PESHAWAR:
A deluge of biblical proportions struck upcountry areas as monsoon rains, cloudbursts and landslides wreaked havoc, claiming more than 200 lives in just 24 hours, officials reported on Friday — a catastrophe survivors likened to the 'doomsday'.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) bore the brunt of the disaster of apocalyptic scale, with Buner district at the eye of the storm. Entire communities were swept off their feet, homes demolished and entire families lost in the blink of an eye.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a grim update late on Friday evening, confirming 194 fatalities nationwide. Of these, 180 were recorded in K-P, nine in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and five in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) region.
Among the victims were at least 19 women and 17 children, with most deaths resulting from collapsing houses and the sudden, punishing surge of flash floods, the NDMA said. Dozens of other people were reported injured across the province.
However, despatches from our correspondents in various areas of K-P suggested a cumulative death toll of 214 in the province, so far — 157 in the Buner district alone. Some media report also put higher death tolls of 10 in G-B and 19 in AJK.
Buner emerged as the hardest hit, with K-P Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah confirming 100 deaths. The deputy commissioner declared flood emergencies in the subdivisions of Daggar, Gadezai, Gagra, Mandanr and Chagharzai, as rescue teams battled against time and raging waters to save lives.
The human cost of the disaster is immense, with harrowing stories of survival and loss emerging from the wreckage.
"I heard a loud noise as if the mountain was sliding. I rushed outside and saw the entire area shaking. I thought it was doomsday," recounted Buner-resident Azizullah.
In the tribal district of Bajaur, bordering Afghanistan, a cloudburst and lightning strike around midnight in the village of Jabrai, Salarzai tehsil, brought utter annihilation. Four houses were demolished, killing 21 people and injuring five others.
Rescue teams, braving treacherous conditions, have recovered most of the victims, though two remain missing. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that entire families were lost; the deceased included eight members of one family and five members each from two other families.
AFP photos from the scene captured the sombre reality: a crowd gathered around an excavator digging through a mud-soaked hill, while nearby, funeral prayers were held in a paddock for several bodies covered by blankets.
Bajaur Deputy Commissioner Shahid Ali confirmed that 19 bodies had been recovered. Rescue efforts were severely hampered by fast-flowing water, rising river levels, and landslides that blocked road access for heavy machinery.
On the Mansehra-Battagram boundary, a cloudburst over the village of Dheri Haleem Neelban in the Shimlai area resulted in one of the deadliest single incidents. More than 25 deaths have been confirmed after lightning strikes and flash floods destroyed 10 houses, washing them into the raging Nandhar stream.
Sixteen bodies, including women and children, have been recovered from various spots along the stream, with search operations continuing for the missing. Most of the deceased are reported to be from the same family.
The broader Mansehra district witnessed multiple tragedies. In Balakot's Nala Khareela Bassi, a car was swept away, killing two occupants. In Khairabad, a house collapse claimed the lives of a mother and her young daughter.
Shangla district is reeling from flash floods and lightning strikes that have swept away more than 20 people, with many still missing and over 50 injured. In one heartbreaking incident, seven members of the same family perished.
The infrastructure has been decimated, with homes, shops, and even graveyards damaged. The main Alpuri-Bisham highway was washed away in two locations, cutting off access to many areas. The district was plunged into darkness after over 35 main power towers were damaged.
Tehsil Puran is reported to be the worst-hit area, with localities like Kozpau, Alloch, and Choga submerged for the first time in memory. In Mansehra, police rescued seven tourists trapped by heavy rain at Lake Samahk Sar. In Swat, rescuers saved six people stranded in the Swat River.
National response mobilised
In response to the escalating crisis, the K-P government declared the severely affected mountainous districts of Buner, Bajaur, Mansehra, and Battagram as disaster-hit areas, and announced Saturday as a day of mourning.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened an emergency meeting to review the flood situation, where he was briefed by NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik. He directed the NDMA to utilise all available resources to support the K-P government in relief and rescue efforts.
The NDMA is actively coordinating a massive response involving the PDMA, Pakistan Army, district administrations, and Rescue 1122. Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir issued special instructions for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people in K-P.
According to security sources, the army chief said that the troops deployed in K-P would extend full assistance in the rehabilitation of flood-affected people. In this regard, additional military contingents were also being dispatched.
They further stated that the army chief instructed the Corps of Engineers to complete bridge repair work as soon as possible and install temporary bridges where necessary. The army's Rescue Sniffing Dog Unit was also being dispatched for search and rescue operations.
Besides, a special Urban Search and Rescue team had also been deployed on the Army Chief's orders, the sources confirmed, adding that army helicopters and the Army Aviation assets had already been deployed for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people.
The Pakistan Army has donated one day's salary and allocated one day's ration - amounting to over 600 tons — for the relief assistance of the flood-affected people of K-P. "The Pakistan Army stands shoulder to shoulder with the brave people of K-P in every moment of hardship," a source said.
More rain forecast
The ordeal in K-P is far from over. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain for Saturday (today), with heavy falls expected in upper K-P, the Potohar region and the Kashmir region.
Authorities warned that further rains could cause more flooding in local streams and rivers and trigger additional landslides in the vulnerable hilly areas of K-P, G-B, Murree and AJK. A PDMA official noted that this year's monsoon season began earlier and is expected to end later. "The next 15 days... the intensity of the monsoon will further exacerbate," he warned.
Elsewhere, heavy rains also crippled infrastructure in G-B, where landslides blocked the crucial Jaglot-Skardu Road at four separate points. The National Highway Authority (NHA) has deployed teams for clearance operations, which are being monitored around the clock.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid rivers and streams and refrain from unnecessary travel. Tourists, in particular, have been advised not to visit northern regions for the next five to six days as Pakistan braces for more rain while mourning a devastating loss of life.
PM orders immediate relief, rescue operation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held an emergency meeting to review the flood situation in the country due to recent rains.
Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik briefed the Prime Minister on the damage caused by cloudbursts and flash floods in the upper parts of the country and about the rescue and relief operation.
The Prime Minister directed the NDMA to continue its cooperation with the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to provide them with all possible support in the rescue and relief operation by utilizing all the available resources.
He directed the Chairman NDMA to enhance coordination with the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for rescue and relief activities.
Tents, medicines, food items and other relief materials should be delivered to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government immediately, he said adding relief supplies should be sent through trucks on priority basis.
He ordered that people and tourists stranded in flood-affected areas should be immediately taken to safer places.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on the progress of rescue and relief operations along with an assessment of the damages.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister held a telephone conversation with Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur.
He said NDMA has been directed to provide all possible assistance to the provincial government in rescue and relief operations.
"The federal government will provide all possible assistance to the provincial government," he remarked.
He told the chief minister that the federal government was sending medicines, tents and food items.
"Our sympathies are with the victims in this difficult time," he added.

The death toll from recent flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa surged to 327 on Saturday as various districts, especially hard-hit Buner, reported more loss of lives, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said on Saturday.
This adds to the casualties in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where the unprecedented floods have claimed at least 12 and nine lives, respectively, besides causing widespread destruction.
KP witnessed devastating scenes yesterday as flash floods caused by heavy rainfall and cloudbursts in multiple districts claimed over 200 lives in a day, including five crew members of a provincial government chopper that crashed in Mohmand during relief and rescue efforts.
Buner was the worst-affected district in the province with 204 lives lost in the past 48 hours, according to a PDMA situation report. It added that 120 people were injured, while Deputy Commissioner Kashif Qayum Khan’s office reported that 50 were still missing.
According to a PDMA report seen by Dawn.com earlier today, Shangla reported 36 deaths, Mansehra 23, Swat 22, Bajaur 21, Battagram 15, Lower Dir five and a child drowned in Abbottabad.
Detailing infrastructure damage, the report said 11 houses were destroyed while 63 were partially damaged due to the floods. Two schools in Swat and another in Shangla were also affected.

The KP government declared an emergency in the severely affected districts of Buner, Bajaur, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Torghar, Upper and Lower Dir and Battagram.
According to a notification available with Dawn.com, the state of emergency will remain in place until August 31 and local administrations in these districts have been authorised to mobilise all resources for relief activities.
“The Provincial Disaster Management Authority shall provide from its central storage … a reasonable quantity of tents and NFIs (non-food items), and/or any other article available if required for the subject purpose,” the notification read.
The KP government released Rs1 billion in funds to the PDMA for “timely compensation/preparedness and response to cope with any untoward situation”, a notification shared by it on X said.
It also allocated over Rs1.55bn worth of funds for its Communication and Works Department for the restoration of highways and bridges in the flood-affected districts.
Additionally, the KP government announced on X that Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur had departed on a visit to areas affected by flooding, where he is expected to “meet with the victims and listen to their issues and difficulties”.
The post did not specify which areas he would visit.
On the directives of Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, the Pakistan Red Crescent in KP set up an Emergency Relief Centre to assist flood-affected districts. It can be contacted on 0300-5849255 (secretary), 0334-9086169 (admin officer), 091-9333666, or 091-2590846.
Meanwhile, the provincial management service (PMS) chairman requested in a letter that the KP finance secretary deduct a day’s salary from all PMS officers and redirect the money for relief work, further requesting that the secretary redirect his “whole salary”.
In a statement on X, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he was “deeply anguished by the devastation caused by cloudbursts and flash floods in KP and northern Pakistan”.
Extending his heartfelt condolences and expressing solidarity, he affirmed: “The government is mobilising all resources for rescue and relief operations.”
The premier added that he met with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik and directed him to “expedite rescue operations in the nine affected districts of Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Torghar, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram, with urgent focus on Bajaur and Battagram”.
“Immediate relief is being provided to stranded residents, medical aid to the injured, and heavy machinery has been deployed to clear roads and restore connectivity,” PM Shehbaz said.
Buner Police’s public relations officer Israr Khan, put the district’s death toll at 207, compared to the 204 stated by the PDMA.
DC Qayum, in a statement, ordered a ban on the entry of private vehicles into Buner, stating that it was hindering rescue and relief work.
PTI interim chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who is an MNA from Buner, and MPA Riaz Khan visited the flood-hit area of Bashonai and met the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the floods, the KP government said.
As the nation observed a day of mourning for the five crew members who died in a helicopter crash during rescue efforts, the national flag flew at half-mast at Governor House in Peshawar.
35 dead, 318 homes destroyed since Aug 15: GB interior minister
Interior Minister Shams Lone said that the bridge on the Baltistan Highway was swept away in the flood, cutting off four districts of Baltistan from Gilgit for the second day.
He said that since August 15, “thirty-five people died, 35 were injured and four are missing in the flood waves. Similarly, 318 houses have been completely demolished and 674 have been partially damaged.”
Lone said that the GB government does not have the resources, so the Army has taken steps to help in relief efforts.
“The Pakistan Army played an important role in the rehabilitation after the massive destruction caused by the Babusar flood and provided food and other essential items to the victims of Ghizer today,” he said. “The Army has played an important role and is still at the forefront in this difficult phase.”
Tourists trapped, power plants damaged in GB’s Naltar Valley: govt
Meanwhile, GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said a “great number of tourists” were trapped in the Naltar Valley as the land route was disconnected after floodwaters washed away a huge chunk of the Naltar Expressway.
In his statement, the official said the power supply in the area had been suspended as the three power plants situated there were shut down due to the floods.
According to Faraq, river waters from the Jaglot Goro stream entered several houses and restaurants in low-lying areas.
He added that floods across the province caused severe damage to public property and infrastructure.
“Flooding in four locations in Gilgit district today severely damaged four power plants, a bridge and an expressway, while a large number of buildings were submerged in Jaglot Guru.”
Faraq said that the floods in Naltar Valley damaged three power plants, cutting off power supply to thousands of people.
“A power plant and a bridge were also damaged in Bagrot, cutting off power, while land communication was suspended due to the bridge being washed away,” Faraq said.
“A flood relay containing heavy stones swept away a house within the limits of Allahwali Lake in Astore in the afternoon,” he added. “Local people ran to save their lives.”

Rescue efforts continue but face challenges
The KP PDMA told AFP that around 2,000 rescue workers were engaged in recovering bodies from the debris and carrying out relief operations in nine affected districts.
Rescue 1122 Director General Muhammad Tayyab Abdullah told Dawn.com that an elite rescue squad of 80 individuals has been formed for areas where operations are facing “intense difficulty”.
“In the past 12 hours, 3,542 emergencies have been responded to, while 76 vehicles are taking part in the rescue operations,” he detailed.
DG Abdullah noted that the teams were facing challenges in their activities because of ruined roads, while people were also not able to contact helplines due to damaged mobile towers.
Similarly, KP Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi told AFP: “Heavy rainfall, landslides in several areas, and washed-out roads are causing significant challenges in delivering aid, particularly in transporting heavy machinery and ambulances.
“Due to road closures in most areas, rescue workers are travelling on foot to conduct operations in remote regions,” he highlighted.
“They are trying to evacuate survivors, but very few people are relocating due to the deaths of their relatives or loved ones being trapped in the debris.”
Meanwhile, PTV News reported that Pakistan Army personnel have arrived in Buner as part of relief efforts. The broadcaster said in a post on X that special equipment from the Army Corps of Engineers will be used to recover bodies and those injured trapped underneath layers of mud.
“Rations and other supplies are being provided through Pakistan Army helicopters, and people are being evacuated from flood-hit areas to safe locations,” PTV News wrote.
A statement issued by Buner’s Rescue 1122 said DG Abdullah, Buner Operations Director Mir Alam, North Region Operations Director Arshad Iqbal and the district emergency officer were supervising the operation themselves.
The Rescue DG urged the public not to go near floodwaters, rainwater drains or bridges, and contact the 1122 helpline in the case of an emergency.
In Battagram, two more bodies were recovered at the Malkal Gali-Neel Band village, which had been impacted by a cloudburst on early Thursday, according to Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Khan.
The rescue operations had resumed at 6am after being suspended at 7:30pm yesterday due to nightfall and the challenging terrain.
Flash floods also severely impacted the power infrastructure in Swat, as floodwaters entered the 132KV Swat grid station, causing the tripping of 41 feeders and the complete suspension of electric supply across the region.
The KP PDMA has said rainfall would continue until August 21 in different parts of the province.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also warned the Balochistan government to take emergency measures to prepare for a new spell of monsoon rains in the province, which will start from Aug 18 and continue until Aug 22.
Villagers in Buner deal with the aftermath
Beshonai village in Buner, a settlement of more than 80 households, was left in ruins a day after flash flooding tore through the village centre.
According to a Dawn.com correspondent on the ground, a steady stream was calmly running beneath the large stones the flood brought in, and though there are some remaining houses along the bank of the stream, most others were completely washed away, along with their inhabitants.
Hakeem Jan, a resident of a nearby village, told Dawn.com that he heard “loud bursts” in the mountains, then “a huge rally of water and big stones colliding and raging downward”.
“Multiple cloudbursts in the upper portion of the Elum valley caught the villagers unguarded, leaving them with no time to escape,” Jan said. “The survivors are the children who were at school away from the village or the ones who are on jobs outside Buner.”

One survivor, Gul Bacha, told Dawn.com, “Most people working in the relief operations are outsiders and there are no confirmed figures on the death toll here. I was upstream when I saw a big wave of black water coming in the direction of our village.
“I ran like crazy and was screaming to the villagers … some people heard me and ran, but most people downstream were caught unawares.”
Javed Khan, a schoolteacher who lost several relatives, told Dawn.com that while no bodies were recovered in Beshornarry, “seventy corpses were swept away and recovered in Peer Baba and Dagar, later laid to rest by locals”.

Peer Baba Union Council Nazim Abbas Shaheen told Dawn.com that accessibility was a major hurdle. “It is almost impossible to bring heavy machinery into the affected areas,” he said.
In Qadar Nagar, another valley in the area affected by the floods, a collective funeral for 56 people was offered, where one family lost 40 people. The two survivors among them were a father and his son, who were at Islamabad airport to collect another son who had returned home from abroad.
After hitting Beshonai village and Qadar Nagar, the floodwater left behind wrecked houses and destroyed vehicles in its path, affecting major towns and villages. Images taken by a correspondent on the ground showed cars swept away and lodged in buildings, as well as flooded school yards.

标题:Floods badly damage infrastructure in KP
时间:2025-8-16 10:14:00

PESHAWAR: The devastating floods that struck several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday badly damaged infrastructure, including roads, bridges, buildings, as well as the electricity installations in the affected areas, besides killing over 200 people.
With damage assessment in progress, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority said seven houses were destroyed and 38 were damaged in the province, mostly in the Swat district. It also reported the destruction of three schools and damage to three.
The PDMA said that the rainfall would continue until August 21 in different parts of the province.
Deaths and damage to infrastructure were recorded in Swat, Buner, Shangla, Bajaur, Lower Dir, Battagram and Mansehra districts.
Meanwhile, the KP government declared one-day mourning on Saturday (today) to honour the five crew members of the Mi-17 helicopter who embraced martyrdom when the aircraft crashed during a rescue operation.
PDMA says rainfall to continue until 21st; govt announces one-day mourning to honour helicopter crash victims
According to a notification issued by the administration department, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the province as a mark of respect.
The Rescue 1122 teams shifted 2,071 stranded people, including 300 schoolchildren, to safety in Buner district following heavy rainfall and flash floods.
Deputy commissioner Kashif Qayyum said that an emergency had been declared across the district as relief efforts continued in the calamity-hit areas.
“Helicopters are being used to carry out rescue operations in remote and inaccessible regions,” he said.
Mr Qayyum said that floodwaters had submerged Pir Baba Bazaar and its neighbourhood, while a mosque in Gokand was destroyed and a large number of animals perished.
Also, several roads were blocked.
Officials said the number of people, who went missing during the flooding, would be known only after waters receded.
In Mansehra, police rescued seven tourists stranded in the upper parts of Kaghan Valley. They had visited Simicsar Lake but were trapped by rain and landslides.
Rains lashed the district throughout the day, dangerously swelling the Indus, Siren and Kunhar rivers along with their tributaries.
The district administration banned tourist visits to the Siren Valley.
Landslides and uprooted trees blocked the Nawazabad and Batrasi roads, which police later cleared for traffic.
Meanwhile, passengers and tourists travelling between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan were stranded in Upper Kohistan after the local administration restricted movement on the Karakoram Highway in the Uchar Nullah area due to high water levels in the Indus River.
Abbottabad city was badly hit as almost all main roads were inundated, creating flood-like conditions throughout the area. The most affected arteries were PMA Kakul Road, Mirpur Mandian Road, Supply Road, Karakoram Highway, Sethi Masjid Road, Iqbal Road, Banda Dalazak, Banda Khair Ali Khan Road, Trakana, and the Link Road near Ciena Laboratory.
Most drainage systems were clogged, leading to rainwater overflowing onto the streets and entering houses to damage goods.
Traffic remained paralysed for hours, especially on the KKH in front of Ayub Teaching Hospital where swift floodwaters swept away several vehicles. Some vehicles broke down due to accumulated mud and debris.
Meanwhile, more than 25 tourists along with their vehicles got stranded in Shahi area due to high water flow on the other side of Kambat and Shahi areas of Lower Dir.
They were evacuated by personnel of the Frontier Corps 181 Wing, Rescue 1122 and the district administration.
Meanwhile, several link roads in Lower Dir remained blocked due to landslides triggered by heavy rain. Candidates for teaching posts in Talash and other areas struggled to reach examination centres.
Traffic was suspended near Gulabad Bazaar at Safruno after floodwaters damaged the road.
Heavy rainfall and flash floods severely damaged the power infrastructure in Swat, as floodwaters entered the 132kv grid station, causing the tripping of 41 feeders and the complete suspension of electricity transmission across the region. The feeder supplying power to Malam Jabba was also submerged, causing extensive damage.
The flash floods washed away several electricity poles and transformers.
On the instructions of federal power minister Awais Ahmad Laghari, the Peshawar Electric Supply Company began efforts to restore power supply.
It deployed additional workforce to expedite the rehabilitation process and dispatched transformers, poles, cables and heavy machinery to support field operations.
