National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) Emergency Operations Centre said extremely heavy rainfall is expected over the next 12–24 hours in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur and adjoining areas.
According to the statement, more than 50 to 100 millimetres of rain could fall in a short period. Owing to intense rainfall and inadequate drainage, the danger of urban flooding remains in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas.
In addition, flash floods are feared in Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro and Dadu districts, while rising water levels in the Indus River and its tributaries could trigger flooding in low-lying areas.
Second spell of rain hits Karachi on Wednesday as the city reeled from record monsoon downpours a day earlier that left at least 11 people dead, inundated neighbourhoods, disrupted power supply and damaged roads.
Rain was reported around Sharah-e-faisal
Also reported around Kala PullKarachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday said the city’s recent downpour was part of the wider challenge of climate change, which has also destroyed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir in recent days.
Addressing a press conference, he said global warming and climate change were a reality and a test for administrations worldwide, citing the situations in New York, Dubai and Mumbai.

The mayor said the heavy rains left residents facing difficulties, with criticism and political point-scoring further exacerbating the situation. He noted that Karachi’s stormwater drains have a capacity of only 40mm. “When rainfall exceeds this amount, consequences become evident,” he said.
He posted on X, urging citizens to avoid Shaheed-e-Millat Road as clearing work was underway at the underpasses, and advised using Stadium Road or Shahrah-e-Quaideen as alternatives.
Please avoid using Shaheed e Millat Road at this point of time. Work is being carried out to clear the underpasses. Alternate of Stadium Road or Shahrah e Quaideen can be used

Traffic diversions also remained in place across the metropolis amid the lingering aftermath of the deluge.
PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaigham forecast that thunderstorms with rain could begin across Karachi within the next two hours.
He warned that due to expected rainfall today and tomorrow, there remained risks of urban flooding.
Rain relief efforts continued through the night and by Wednesday morning, Sharah-e-Faisal was mostly cleared, as was Shahrah-e-Bhutto. However, Korangi Crossing near Qayyumanbad remained flooded and closed from either side.
Vehicles were diverted from Qayyumabad Chowrangi towards Baloch Colony and from the CNG cut towards Godown Chowrangi, Express News reported.
The EBM Causeway Road near Mehmoodabad was also shut, with diversions set from Mehmoodabad towards the Expressway and from Godam Chowrangi towards Qayyumabad and Shan Chowrangi.
On Sharae Faisal, the track from the airport remained closed because of deep potholes and accumulated water, forcing traffic diversions from Star Gate.
Tariq Road underpass on Shahrah-e-Millat and Drigh Road Underpass towards the airport were also shut, with vehicles redirected to the service lane.
In Nazimabad, multiple underpasses — including Nazimabad No 1, Nazimabad No 2, Liaquatabad and the stretch linking Habib Bank to Hakim Ibn-e-Sina Road — were closed to traffic.
At Sohrab Goth, the underpass was declared impassable, with traffic from Shafiq Mor diverted over the underpass.
Urdu Bazaar
Several vehicles were stranded between Model Colony and Sharae Faisal. The Nazimabad Chowrangi underpass near Sir Syed College also remained submerged and both tracks were unusable.
Meanwhile, the road from Liaquatabad Post Office to Sindh Hotel, which caved in during Tuesday’s rains, still awaits restoration.
Trash bins were placed on the collapsed stretch to warn pedestrians.
Jehangir Road, Guru Mandir
Public transport bus stuck in a pothole in the Korangi area, where the road had recently been dug up.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-e-Hadeed (178mm) and Keamari (173mm). Other significant totals were logged at Airport Old Area (163.5mm), Jinnah Terminal (156.4mm), Surjani Town (151.4mm), Nazimabad (149.6mm), North Karachi (148.8mm), Saadi Town (146mm), Met Office University Road (145mm), Korangi (138.7mm), DHA Phase VII (138mm), PAF Faisal Base (133mm), Gulshan-e-Maymar (102.6mm), PAF Masroor Base (101mm) and Orangi Town (81.2mm).

"Metrics show a major disruption to internet connectivity across Pakistan with high impact to backbone operator PTCL; overall national connectivity is down to 20% of ordinary levels," NetBlocks reported in a post on X.
Former telecom employee Naval Vaswani said, “I have worked in telcos for 6 years previously. Basically, two things happen: power failures cause telco sites to go offline, and some have power backups, which have high revenues. Networks are planned in a cluster way so customer load is managed. A few sites are going offline due to cluster shifts, load to online sites, which causes degradation. People are stuck in traffic in large numbers, generally, which causes extra load on telco sites. Some hardware has a limitation ranging from 200–400 users. If that threshold is exceeded, the service degrades.”
She further added, “Power outage with low or no backup, data has limitations for distance compared to voice and there are areas where there is no blanket coverage, resulting load on a few nearby connected towers. Heavy rain and wind/thunderstorms can degrade signal quality, reduce coverage, and potentially cause outages.”

KARACHI:
Southern parts of the country, including Karachi, that had until now dodged the worst of the monsoon downpours were on Tuesday battered by heavy rains that played havoc with the provincial metropolis, killing at least eight people, flooding all key roads, submerging underpasses and paralysing all segments of life.
The rain, which began in the first half of the day, continued, with only a short lull, until after sunset.
As the traffic system collapsed, drainage lines buckled and power supply snapped under the strain, Karachi's rickety infrastructure seemed to come apart at the seams.
At least eight people lost their lives in rain-related incidents, including electrocution and the collapse of concrete structures. As Karachi's ageing pipes and sewerage system fought a losing battle against the deluge, rush hour commuters were left stranded in rising waters and several neighbourhoods were plunged into darkness.
The rain was expected to continue until Saturday, and "another spell is to start by the end of the month", said NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik.
According to the Met Office, as of 8pm, Saadi Town recorded the highest rainfall at 176 millimetres, followed by Gulshan-i-Hadeed at 173mm, Airport Old Area 158.7mm, Jinnah Terminal 152.8mm, Nazimabad 149.6mm, Surjani Town 145.2mm, Keamari 140mm, Defence Housing Authority Phase VII 134mm, University Road 133mm, PAF Base Faisal 128mm, North Karachi 108.4mm, Korangi 132.2mm, Gulshan-i-Maymar 98mm, PAF Masroor Base 87mm, Orangi Town 66.2mm and Bahria Town 4.8mm.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced a public holiday for all provincial government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions in the province on Wednesday (today). Schools will also remain closed, he added. However, he noted that all essential services and civic institutions would remain open.
The situation also prompted telephonic contact between the Sindh chief minister and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who discussed the aftermath of the rains and reviewed relief measures.
Balochistan
Meanwhile, it has also been raining in 15 districts of Balochistan, and the main highway connecting the province with Sindh has been blocked for heavy vehicles, said provincial disaster official Muhammad Younis.
Between 40 and 50 houses have been damaged in two districts, he added.
Forecast
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast torrential rains in Sindh and parts of Balochistan over the coming days, warning of potential urban flooding, flash floods and damage to infrastructure.
According to the Met Office, strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are continuously penetrating the country, particularly affecting southern regions.
In Sindh, widespread rain, wind and thundershowers with heavy to very heavy falls are expected in Mithi, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazirabad, Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar and Jamshoro. Rainfall is also likely at scattered places in Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur and Jacobabad from August 19 to 22 with occasional breaks.
In Balochistan, rain, wind and thundershowers with scattered heavy falls are likely in Barkhan, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, Khuzdar, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, Gwadar and Panjgur during the same period.
Meanwhile, subdued rain and thundershowers are expected in parts of Islamabad, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Punjab (including Rawalpindi, Murree, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Lahore), southern Punjab (including Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan and Rajanpur), and various districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa from August 19 to 22.
The PMD has cautioned that torrential rains may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Sajawal and adjoining districts. In Balochistan, heavy downpours could trigger flash floods in northern and southeastern regions.
Strong winds, heavy rainfall and lightning may damage weak structures, including rooftops of vulnerable mud-brick house, electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels. The department advised the public, travellers and tourists to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary exposure to vulnerable areas and stay updated with the latest weather alerts.
Authorities concerned have been urged to stay on high alert and take precautionary measures to prevent any untoward situation.

• Sindh govt declares holiday today to deal with aftermath
• City at a standstill as main thoroughfares closed off; underpasses submerged after storm drains overflow
• Flight operations at Jinnah International Airport disrupted
• Met Office warns of more rains to come as low-pressure area over Indian Gujarat likely to intensify
KARACHI: Unprecedented heavy monsoon rains lashed Karachi on Tuesday, claiming at least six lives, flooding neighbourhoods, and leaving people frustrated and helpless with the Pakistan Meteorological Department warning of more showers to come.
The rains severely strained Karachi’s fragile infrastructure, causing stormwater drains and sewers to burst, and bringing life in the bustling “City of Lights” to a grinding halt. Even upscale neighborhoods like Defence Housing Authority and Clifton were severely affected, with rainwater flooding homes and adding to the misery of residents.
Shortly after the heavy rains hit the city, power outages swept across the city, plunging several areas into darkness and compounding the challenges faced by residents. The domestic and international flight operations at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi were also affected badly, with the Pakistan Aviation Authority (PAA) confirming that several flights were either delayed, cancelled or diverted to alternative airport due to inclement weather.
By 10pm, the maximum rainfall was recorded in Gulshan-i-Hadeed 170mm, or 6.69 inches, and the minimum rainfall was 66.2mm in Orangi Town, according to data released by the Met Office.
Due to the severity of the situation, the provincial administration announced a public holiday in Karachi on Wednesday (today).
Anjum Niaz Zaigham, the focal person of the Met department, said that the rain did not broke previous records but “it’s unprecedented heavy downpour”.
“A low pressure area over Indian Gujarat caused heavy downpour in Karachi,” he said, adding that the next two days were very important for the city as another depression from Odissa, India, would reach Gujarat and was expected to become more intense on Wednesday and Thursday and affect Karachi and other southern areas.
Karachi’s major arteries, including Sharea Faisal, M.A. Jinnah Road, and I.I. Chundrigarh Road, were severely flooded, with hundreds of cars and motorcycles submerged. Thousands of commuters were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours, one of the worst jams in the city’s history, with many abandoning their vehicles as fuel ran low, adding to the chaos.
The worst affected were the home-returning people, particularly women, who had to wade through waist-deep water in the business district of the metropolis. Thousands of them endured an agonising ordeal, taking over 10 hours to reach home from work due to the city’s severely congested and flooded roads.
As many as six people died in rain-related incidents. Of them, five were killed in house and wall collapse incidents while the sixth died from electrocution, officials said.
The severity of the urban flooding in the city was starkly evident as a high-rise building in Soldier Bazaar was inundated up to its first floor during the downpour and 80 stranded residents were rescued.
A Rescue-1122 spokesperson told Dawn that the building was under water up to 1st floor with residents trapped. He said their rescue teams rushed to the spot after receiving information at around 5:41pm and rescued the residents.
However, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation claimed in a statement that despite the intensity of the downpour, the “metropolis returned to normalcy following the timely measures and directives issued by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab”.
PM concerned over situation
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, expressing concern over the heavy rains in Karachi and other cities.
CM House Spokesman Rasheed Channa said that the chief minister briefed the prime minister on the government’s relief efforts, noting that water drainage work began promptly after the rain subsided.
He said that he chief minister had ordered all relevant agencies to remain on high alert as heavy monsoon rains continue to affect the region.
The chief minister also instructed the traffic police to remain vigilant in low-lying and high-traffic areas, guiding the public during the inclement weather. Both leaders expressed regret over the loss of life and property, with the prime minister assuring the chief minister of federal support during the emergency.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori also called Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, briefing him on the rain-induced situation in Karachi and requesting federal assistance to alleviate the crisis.
