标题:Mudslide-created lake in Gilgit Baltistan sparks fears of catastrophic flooding

A 7-km (4-mile) lake in northern Pakistan, created by a mountain mudslide, is threatening to burst and unleash potentially "catastrophic" floods downstream, officials warned on Saturday.

The mud flow descended into the main Ghizer River channel and blocked it completely on Friday, creating the lake in Gilgit Baltistan province, the National Disaster Management Authority said.

The blockage created a "dam-like structure" that poses a significant threat of bursting, it said in a situation report by its provincial office.

The new lake "can cause a catastrophic flood", said Zakir Hussain, director general of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.

Four downstream districts - Ghizer, Gilgit, Astore and Diamer - face a serious threat, he told Reuters.

Ghizer is north of the mountain districts in northwest Pakistan where floods triggered by the worst of this year's monsoon rains and cloudbursts have killed nearly 400 people since August 15.

A video shared by the national authority on a WhatsApp group where it issues statements shows black mud sliding down the mountain before landing in the river. Reuters could not independently verify the video, which an official at the authority said was shot by residents.

Similar mud flows landed in the river from different mountainsides, said provincial government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq.

A shepherd on higher ground, the first to spot the mud flow crashing down, alerted villagers and local authorities, he said. As a result of the warning, he said, nearly 200 people in dozens of scattered houses tucked in the mountainsides and the river's surroundings were rescued.

The lake has started discharging water, meaning the threat of a burst is receding, but flash floods in downstream districts cannot be ruled out until the lake is completely cleared, Faraq said.

The communities downstream have been directed to stay on high alert and vacate areas along the river, he said.

Floods across Pakistan have killed 785 since the monsoon started in late June, the national authority said, warning of two more rain spells by September 10.

PESHAWAR: A government report has revealed the catastrophic impact of a recent cloudburst and subsequent flooding in Pakistans Buner district, causing large-scale destruction to lives, property, and infrastructure, ARY News reported.

According to the report, the floods in Buner claimed 234 lives, the highest death toll in the affected areas. The disaster destroyed 162 houses and partially damaged 575 others.

Key infrastructure was severely hit, with 110 kilometers of roads, bridges, and other facilities extensively damaged.

Agricultural losses in Buner are staggering, as 55,890 acres of farmland were submerged. Additionally, 825 shops were destroyed, and 3,638 livestock perished, dealing a severe blow to local livelihoods.

The Public Health Department faced damages worth Rs 194.8 million due to the collapse of water channels and related infrastructure.

Similarly, the Education Department reported that 29 educational institutions were affected, including one school completely destroyed and several others partially damaged.

The Agriculture Department confirmed that 26,142 acres of crops were ruined, leading to losses exceeding Rs 250 million.

Meanwhile, the Highway Authority stated that 4 kilometers of road were washed away, causing damages of more than Rs 320 million.

Authorities have warned that rehabilitation will require significant resources as the region struggles to recover from the widespread devastation caused by the cloudburst and floods.

Earlier, Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the federal governments commitment to supporting flood-affected families and expediting rehabilitation efforts, particularly in the worst-hit districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by recent heavy rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods in Swat, Swabi, Mansehra, Shangla, and other areas.

He said federal ministers, secretaries, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the armed forces were fully engaged in relief operations.

Recalling the destruction from the 2022 Pakistan floods, which claimed around 100 lives, the premier noted that this years flash floods had resulted in an even heavier human toll, with more than 700 deaths nationwideover 400 of them in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone.

He also expressed solidarity with victims in Karachi, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

PM of Pakistan stressed the need to discourage illegal constructions along waterways, warning that such practices aggravated flood risks.

Pakistans premier also raised concern over large-scale tree cutting in Galyat and other regions, vowing to convene a meeting soon on environmental protection.

标题:Two large lakes formed by glacial outburst in Gilgit-Baltistan: officials

时间:2025-8-23 09:09:00

正文:

Two large lakes have emerged following glacial outbursts in Gilgit-Baltistans (GB) Ghizer district following flooding caused by heavy rain this month, regional officials said on Saturday.

A glacial burst, or glacial lake outburst flood (glof), refers to an outburst of water from a glacial lake which could lead to severe flooding downstream. At least 200 people were rescued after a glacier burst in GB, blocking the Ghizer River a day prior.

Due to yesterdays glacial burst, water containing debris and heavy stones fell into the river and stopped it from flowing for eight to nine hours.

The water remained standing, causing river water to spread for seven kilometres and become an artificial lake, provincial government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq told Dawn.com.

Meanwhile, the GB Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) said that the Ghizer River changed course in the district on August 4 and began flowing over the Gilgit-Chitral Road.

A lake measuring 2,000 feet long and more than 50 metres wide has emerged in Khatam village as a result of the flood debris, due to which the Gilgit-Chitral Road is still closed, GBDMA district official Ghufranullah Baig told Dawn.com.

This lake has affected a small settlement nearby, while trees and a large area of land have been submerged.

Asraruddin Asrar, a prominent social figure from Ghizer, told Dawn.com that lakes being formed by natural floods in the area were an ongoing phenomenon for a long time.

Khalti Lake was formed in the 1980s; it still exists and has a great reputation in the area as a tourist attraction, he said. Sost Lake came into existence in the 1990s, and a lake was also formed at Haim last year as a result of floods. The largest number of lakes is found in Ghizer district.

In 2010, a landslide in Attabad blocked the Hunza River, resulting in the renowned Attabad Lake, which is a popular destination for tourists.

Pakistan is home to over 13,032 glaciers, the largest reservoir of glaciers outside of the polar regions. However, experts have warned that about 10,000 glaciers in Chitral and GB have been reported to be receding due to climate changeinduced temperature rise.

Earlier this month, a glof from the Shishper Glacier tore through Hassanabad Nullah, sweeping away part of the Karakoram Highway and destroying public and private properties.

A glacier burst in Bagrot Valley caused the death of one person on August 1, while his father was injured, according to the regional governments spokesperson.
