CHITRAL: Heavy rain in the villages of Shali, Khora Lasht and Bilphok situated on the outskirt of Chitral city on Thursday triggered a flash flood, which damaged standing crops, gardens and property, while vehicular traffic remained suspended on Garam Chashma Road due to a landslide.

Two vehicles were swept away in the flash flood at two separate locations on the same road. There were, however, no casualties as the vehicles were empty.

Due to the road closure dozens of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the landslide.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Lower Chitral, Rao Hashim Azeem, along with assistant commissioner Riaz Ahmed visited various flood-affected areas and inspected the ongoing clearance operation on the affected road.

On this occasion, he directed the departments concerned to further speed up the operation so that the difficulties faced by the commuters were resolved as soon as possible.

The district administration is also providing food, clean drinking water, and first aid to the people in affected areas.

The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) announced on Friday that the MultanSukkur Motorway (M-5) has been closed because of flooding, with traffic diverted to alternate routes.

An NHMP spokesperson said traffic from Multan to Sukkur can use the National Highway via Shah Shams Interchange and rejoin the M-5 at Uch Sharif Interchange.

Motorists travelling from Sukkur to Multan can leave the M-5 at Uch Sharif Interchange, continue on the National Highway, and rejoin at Sher Shah Interchange.

Patrol officers and road user guides are deployed on site to assist drivers and ensure smooth traffic flow, the spokesperson added.

Earlier on Thursday, the federal government announced plans for additional controlled breaches along the MultanSukkur Motorway (M-5) to manage floodwaters threatening Jalalpur Pirwala and adjoining areas.

The decision followed a special meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan and attended by senior Punjab officials, the National Highway Authority (NHA), NESPAK, and other agencies.

Officials confirmed flood damage at five locations on the motorway, inundating villages in Multan, Lodhran, and Bahawalpur districts and forcing the closure of the MultanUch Sharif section. Diversions are in place while NHA teams work around the clock to restore traffic.

Minister Khan said safeguarding lives and property takes precedence over infrastructure, assuring full federal support for any measures recommended by the Punjab government to protect Jalalpur Pirwala city.

标题:Flows normalise in most Punjab rivers

时间:2025-9-19

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD:

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab on Thursday said river flows across the province are returning to normal, with only low- to medium-level flooding reported at a few locations.

According to PDMA spokesperson, water levels have subsided significantly in flood-hit areas, while the Indus, Jhelum, Ravi, and Chenab rivers are now flowing at normal levels. Flows at the Punjnad headworks have also normalized.

However, moderate flooding persists in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala, while low-level flooding has been recorded at Sulemanki and Islam headworks. The PDMA confirmed that hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan are also flowing at normal levels.

The PDMA DG said the provincial administration remains on alert under the chief minister's directives, with relief operations continuing in affected areas. Citizens have been advised to contact the emergency helpline 1129 in case of any crisis.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has warned of potential increase in river flows over the next two days due to rain forecast. Thunderstorms with scattered rainfall are expected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Lahore divisions, while Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Zhob divisions may also receive intermittent showers.

Heavy inflows have been reported at Sindh's barrages. Guddu is currently witnessing a medium-level discharge of 500,000 cusecs, Sukkur is facing high flood levels with 571,000 cusecs, while Kotri is experiencing medium-level flows but remains at risk of potential flooding.

The NEOC cautioned that heavy rains may trigger dangerous surges in hill torrents and mountain streams. Citizens have been urged to avoid crossing inundated roads, bridges, and nullahs during high flow.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said it is closely monitoring the situation and has directed all relevant departments to take preemptive measures. Residents of flood-prone areas have been advised to stay updated through official alerts and the Authority's disaster alert app.
